God’s Widow Helpers helps 84-year-old woman
Members of God’s Widow Helpers, a group of tradesmen, opened their tool bags to help a woman in need.
The volunteers in-stalled a paved entry path for Alice Mitchell, 84, of Sunland who is mostly blind and has diabetes.
Mitchell, who has lived in Sequim since 1997 and whose husband, Ralph, died in 1999, said she is very happy with the work.
“I was walking on clouds all day,” Mitchell said. “I think it’s the most wonderful thing. The whole city of Sequim thrives on volunteerism.”
Tony Cortani, owner of Tim’s Cabinets and co-founder of Helpers, said a former customer told him about Mitchell and that her front entry was hard for her to maneuver.
The pathway to her front porch was made of 4 feet by 4 feet concrete squares and the ground had settled, making the blocks more like uneven steps.
“People were worried about her tripping and hurting herself,” Cortani said.
A seven-person crew took out the blocks in less than two hours on Oct. 14 and put in forms for a three-man crew that poured concrete on Oct. 18.
Volunteers came from A.J. Webb Construction Company, Sequim Redi-Mix and Tim’s Cabinets.
Thomas Building Center provided materials at cost.
A different crew came on Oct. 21 and installed a new floor in her garden shed.
“I could never have afforded to do this on my own,” Mitchell said. “I can’t believe my luck. This is the first time I’ve ever received something like this.”
Cortani said the group’s next project is building a deck for a 90-year-old amputee who can’t access her backyard.
“If I had more help and sponsors, we could do a lot more,” Cortani said.
He said the summer months stopped some projects because volunteers weren’t available.
Cortani continues to seek skilled laborers, cash donations for supplies, miscellaneous help with clean-up, food, etc., and yard workers.
“We are set up as a nonprofit through Volunteer Chore Services in Port Angeles, so donations are tax deductible,” he said.
