A 19-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison and three years of community custody after pleading guilty to a string of summer burglaries.

Cody Runnion, who is a transient, was arrested in August and charged with two counts of burglary in the second degree, theft in the third degree, four counts of residential burglary, possession of methamphetamine and conspiracy to commit robbery in the second degree. Runnion was linked to four residential burglaries in Sequim.

Runnion admitted guilt to all charges but the last, which he denied but agreed had enough evidence to support a finding of guilt.

Clallam County Deputy Prosecutor Jesse Espinoza said the plea deal reached will give Runnion the opportunity to receive drug treatment, which was recommended because of Runnion’s age and addiction to drugs.

Runnion received a prison drug offender sentencing alternative, which resulted in three years in state prison and three years of community custody, Espinoza said.

“When we have offenders committing property crimes to pay for drugs, we’d rather not have them go to prison for five years and come out untreated,” Espinoza said.

Community custody, a form of active supervision, will involve a Department of Corrections officer assigned to Runnion, Espinoza said. Runnion would receive counseling, continue treatment if necessary, report to the DOC regularly and could be subject to other terms such as drug testing.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge S. Brooke Taylor presided over the sentencing. Runnion was represented by Loren Oakley of the Public Defender’s Office.
