Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green, kneeling, leads a demonstration on growing berries. Stehr-Green presents “Growing a Berry Delicious Garden: Strawberries and Blueberries” on April 14 and speaks about caneberries on June 23 as part of the WSU Master Gardeners’ “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” brown-bag series.

WSU Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will present “Growing a Berry Delicious Garden: Strawberries and Blueberries” at noon Thursday, April 14, in the county commissioners’ meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The first of two lectures on growing berries on the Olympic Peninsula, the presentation helps gardeners identify the varieties available, see how they can be selected so as to extend the fresh berry season, learn what conditions are ideal for planting, understand how to prune and train plants and recognize symptoms of common berry diseases.

In addition to her nine years of experience in growing berries in Clallam County, Stehr-Green has provided more than 1,800 hours of volunteer service diagnosing and providing solutions to plant problems at Master Gardener plant clinics and has written and edited articles on gardening.

Part two of this program, scheduled for June  23, will cover caneberries.

The presentations are part of the “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” brown-bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles. Attendees may bring a lunch. For information, call 417-2279.
