To honor those who “protect our way of life,” Security Services Northwest, Inc. is sponsoring a “Unity of Effort” celebration at Fort Discovery, the firm’s vast property on Discovery Bay. The Saturday, Aug. 13, celebration marks the first time the facilities, which are used for security training, will be open to the public.

The celebration honors members of the police, fire services and the various branches of the U.S. military.
Events run from noon-5 p.m., including a concert of patriotic music by the U.S. Army’s 56th Army Band.

The band will play from 1:05-2:30 p.m.

Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna will serve as the day’s honorary guest speaker.

Also on tap, a demonstration of dog skills by the Port Angeles Police Department’s K-9 Unit, a shooting contest and special events for children.

A U.S. Customs helicopter also will be on hand.

Honored guests for the day’s events include Airlift NW, Jefferson County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit, Jefferson County Fire Districts 3 and 5, USMC Security Forces Bangor, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army 4-6 Air Cav and Washington’s Most Wanted.

The greater good

A $10 donation for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation will be requested at the gate for each adult (children enter free).

The Warrior Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that provides college scholarships to the surviving children of fallen members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps Special Operations Forces.

The foundation also provides financial assistance and support to special operations personnel who are severely wounded.

A shuttle bus to Fort Discovery will be running throughout the day from the south parking lot of 7 Cedars Casino. It will leave the casino on the half hour beginning at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m. The shuttle departs from Fort Discovery for the return trip from noon-6 p.m.

Organizers say the event is limited to 1,500 attendees. To reserve a space, call 877-876-4750 or e-mail info@ssnwhq.com.
