Planning commission cancels meeting
The Clallam County Planning Commission meeting scheduled for today, Jan. 4, is cancelled. The commission will reconvene Wednesday, Jan.18, in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., in Port Angeles.
Learn avalanche awareness
The Friends of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center sponsor a free avalanche awareness course from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Sound Bikes and Kayaks, 120 E. Front St., Port Angeles.
The course will be led by Tyler Reed, an AMGA Certified Ski Mountaineering Guide, AIARE Avalanche Course Instructor and owner of Pacific Alpine Guides.

Stop the Checkpoints group to meet
Stop the Checkpoints meets from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Archives Room at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. The group will hear reports on recent Border Patrol activity and plan future actions to defend immigrant workers and families.
Free women’s self-defense seminar set
Phoenix Dragon Martial Arts Self Defense and Fitness, 1025 E. First St., Port Angeles, hosts a free women’s self-defense seminar from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.

Guild thrift store open Saturday
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7. Holiday items have been replaced with furniture, home accessories, winter clothing and kitchen items. Volunteers still are needed and consignments may be made during the regular business week. ‘Authentic You’ subject of wellness workshop
The Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic will have a WOW! Working on Wellness health education program at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the clinic, 777 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Victoria Jazwic, C.Ht., a motivational hypnotherapist, will offer a workshop, “Creating a Personal Vision for the Authentic You.”

Presentation covers Scots-Irish genealogy
The Clallam County Genealogical Society hosts a free presentation by Virginia Majewski on “Ulster Ancestors: Searching for the Scots-Irish in Northern Ireland,” from 9:45 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
Majewski holds certificates from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies, University of Toronto.

PFOA continues spay/neuter program
Sharon Palmer, spay/neuter coordinator for Peninsula Friends of Animals, reported that the group’s Nickel Neuter Day on Dec. 7 was a success, with the neutering of 35 male cats belonging to low-income families. PFOA works to reduce the cat and dog overpopulation on the peninsula, saving many from lives of homelessness, abuse and hunger.

Sequim Arts is seeking artists and artisans to give presentations about their artistic mediums and talents at the organization’s monthly meetings in the coming months.
