A year after his landlord found 60 pounds of marijuana in his room, Colin McCurdy, 27, of Sequim, was sentenced April 25 to 50 months in prison.

A jury found McCurdy guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of more than 40 grams of marijuana following a trial April 11.

According to court documents and testimony, McCurdy was renting a room from a local woman using the name Miles Tritter. After he was denied an extension on his rent, the landlady discovered the marijuana in his bedroom and called law enforcement.

Responding sheriff’s deputies obtained a search warrant and discovered 60 pounds of “bud” marijuana, two firearms and paperwork in McCurdy’s name, Deputy Prosecutor John Troberg said.

McCurdy had prior convictions for assault, drugs and possession of stolen property, making him ineligible to possess firearms, Troberg said.

“The landlady was particularly courageous in calling law enforcement with her discovery,” Troberg said, adding the safety of the community often rests in the hands of citizens who come forward with information.

Local law enforcement valued the marijuana at about $250,000, making it likely McCurdy was acting as a courier for an organization, Troberg said.

Judge S. Brooke Taylor sentenced McCurdy to 50 months in prison and imposed $3,000 in court fees.
