Artists needed to paint/decorate milk cans for Sequim Centennial

The Sequim Centennial Committee is looking for artists to paint or decorate vintage milk cans for display at the upcoming Sequim Centennial Celebration.  Local residents donated 14 cans cleaned and prepped for each artist, with nine still available.

The milk cans will be displayed throughout the City during the Centennial Celebration, which kicks off on October 27, 2012.  The cans will be auctioned off at the Centennial Grand Finale on November 2, 2013.  The name of the donor and the artist will be placed on each milk can.

At one time the Sequim-Dungeness Valley was the largest dairy center in the state of Washington with several hundred dairy farms.  At the industry peak, it was believed there were 9,000 cows within a five-mile radius of Sequim.  In 1917 the industry was so strong the Washington State Dairymen’s Association held its convention in Sequim and in the 1960s, the Town of Sequim’s letterhead claimed the title of “Dairy Center of the Northwest.”

“Sequim has such a rich history of dairy farming, the Centennial Committee thought this would be a really fun way to represent our past and develop a public art project for the Centennial Celebration,” said Centennial Committee Chairman Karen Kuznek-Reese.

For more information or to participate in the project, contact Karen Kuznek-Reese, City Clerk at 683-3149 or kkuznek@sequimwa.gov.
