The Campaign for Kids Phone-A-Thon Event takes place at the Boys & Girls Clubs on Saturday, Aug. 25. Volunteers will be phoning to take pledges to support the clubs’ programs.

ONP marks Founders Day
Olympic National Park invites the public to visit on Founders Day, Saturday, Aug. 25. On Aug. 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act, creating the National Park Service.

Free community dinner set
Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave.,
Sequim, hosts a free community dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30.
The baked talapia dinner includes vegetables, salad, dessert and beverages.
Reservations are recommended: Call the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or e-mail dinners@sequimtumc.org.
The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Balloon fest invites volunteers
The Sequim Balloon Festival, Sept. 1-3, www.sequimballoonfestival.com, needs volunteers for everything from early morning balloon ground crews to ticket sales to hosting balloon pilots.
With each completed four-hour shift, volunteers are entered to win a free ride in a balloon.

Dinner/dance to aid firefighters
The Port Angeles Fire Department Auxiliary and District 2 Volunteer Firefighters host a “Firefighter Harvest” fundraiser spaghetti dinner and dance from 6 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Clallam County Fairgrounds Home Arts Building.
Proceeds support fire relief baskets, scholarships and equipment for District 2.
The event includes a wine tasting, a silent auction and music by Way Cool.
Tickets ($25) are available in Port Angeles at the Port Angeles Fire Department, 102 E. Fifth St.; the Spa Shop, 230-C E. First St. and KONP, 721 E. First St.

Transportation forum is online
The Washington State Transportation Commission recently created the Voice of Washington State, an online forum regarding regional transportation issues, at
voiceofwashingtonstate-west.ideascale.com.
The commission encourages the public to contribute ideas and criticism. The forum, officials say, is an opportunity to impact the state’s next transportation plan; the results will be reported to the state Legislature and the governor.

Help monitor Morse Creek
The North Olympic Salmon Coalition needs water-loving volunteers to help monitor Morse Creek.
No experience is necessary, training is provided. Volunteers need to be comfortable working in water for an extended period.
Chest waders and boots are needed and can be provided.  Bring plenty of water, snacks and warm clothes.

Second forum on homelessness set
The second annual Regional Forum on Ending Homelessness on the North Olympic Peninsula is set for 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s community center at 1033 Old Blyn Highway, Blyn.
The forum had been set for Oct. 17.
Anyone interested in ending homelessness should call Martha Ireland, Shelter Providers Network coordinator, at 452-4737.

Centennial group preps calendar
The Sequim Centennial Committee is developing an 18-month calendar of events and seeks information about any local events planned between Oct. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2013.
Event planners may send submissions for the calendar, suggestions or questions to Sequim City Clerk Karen Kuznek-Reese at kkuznek@sequimwa.gov or call 681-3428.
The centennial committee meets at 1 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St.
