Master Gardeners Janet Lamont and Dee Sudduth discuss a serious, widespread and difficult-to-control plant disease, Phytophthera, at noon Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Emergency Operations Center, basement of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

More than 100 species of this pathogen can infect potato, squash and cucumber, strawberry and soybean crops along with many woody ornamentals such as rhododendrons, dogwood, alder, yew, deodar cedar, heather, juniper and boxwood.

Lamont and Sudduth explain how Phytophthera spreads, its impact on local gardens, how to recognize Phytophthera, how to avoid it and what to do if it already is in a home garden.

Lamont is an educator and lifelong gardener and naturalist. Sudduth has nearly 40 years of entomology and plant disease experience working for California’s Departments of Food and Agriculture and Fish and Game.

The Green Thumb Garden Tips brown bag series is sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners. Attendees may bring a lunch. Call 417-2279 for more information.
