Police are investigating a rash of vehicle prowls committed this week and urging people to lock their car doors.

In a period of two days there were 11 car prowls reported in the tree street neighborhoods — Fir, Alder, Spruce and Cedar streets — north of Washington Street.

Sgt. Dave Campbell said all the prowls are considered "snatch and grabs," which means the suspect opened an unlocked car door and took whatever was convenient and could be sold quickly, commonly for drugs.

Cash from purses or wallets, sunglasses and even a gun left in unlocked cars were stolen in the vehicle prowls, he said.

"Lock your doors," he said. "These would not be happening if people locked their doors."

Vehicle prowls where the suspect smashes a window or otherwise forces entry into the car are very unusual in Sequim, he said.

Campbell said one person saw the suspect and described him as a young white man, approximately 20 years old and 6 feet tall with long brown hair. The suspect abandoned his bicycle at the scene and it is being processed for forensic evidence, Campbell said.
