On Jan. 26, 1700, a gigantic earthquake shook the Pacific Northwest coast, including all counties in present-day Western Washington. An examination of Clallam County Native American accounts shows that earthquakes may be represented in their oral tradition. One such story tells of a great flood with details about severe tidal disturbances, incursion of saltwater into freshwater and death and dislocation along the coasts.

These stories of the Great Flood are featured at the Museum at the Carnegie. On Saturday, Jan. 26, take a walk back in time and imagine the impact of the earthquake on the people living here.

Information on earthquake preparedness will be available and a limited number of free hand warmers will be given to visitors.

The museum is at 207 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles, and is open on Saturdays from noon-5 p.m.
