Sequim’s Staples will close on Sept. 28.
Jim Manderscheid, the store’s assistant manager, said he hasn’t been told why the store is closing.
“Anything I have to say would be speculation.”
The store has been open in Sequim for approximately 14 years, Manderscheid said.
Another worker said the store now has “15 to 20 employees.”
They’re trying to clear the merchandise from the shelves, with 30 percent off on the “display” office furniture, and 10 percent off on the display computers.
Manderscheid said there may be additional sales before closing.
Staples’ neighbor in the shopping center, Del’s Feed & Farm Supply, called it quits in January.
At the time a former assistant manager of Del’s said the closure was due in part to a $3,000 per month jump in the cost of the store’s lease, bringing the monthly total to $13,000.
Property manager Mike Foley says that wasn’t the case, though he declined to provide specifics regarding tenants.
Susan Baritelle, the owner of Dungeness Kids Company, said she enjoyed a good working relationship with Foley through the five years she housed her business in the shopping center. “He even lowered my rent after my lease expired,” she said.
Baritelle said the only reason she left was to move to a site with greater traffic. She re-opened her shop earlier this year at 163 W. Washington Street.
Foley said he’s frustrated with the loss of tenants, which in past years has included Godfather’s Pizza and Big Lots, but said he has Sequim real estate professionals who are seeking new tenants.
“We’re always looking,” he said.
Officials with Staples have not returned phone calls from the Gazette.
