JOSEPH DANIEL ANKERBERG

February 25, 1930-November 1, 2009

On Sunday, November 1, 2009, Joseph Daniel Ankerberg, a retired Los Angeles County Fire Department Firefighter and Captain, went home to be with the Lord at age 79. He died at home in Sequim, WA, surrounded by family, as he quietly slipped into eternity after a brave battle for 10 months with metastatic melanoma cancer. Miraculously, he had no pain in spite of numerous tumors internally.

Joe was diagnosed in December 2008 with his first tumor found in the lung, and no primary site on the skin. He entered a clinical trial with an experimental drug, as well as chemo and surgery, at the Moffitt

Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida for the next 5 months. He and his wife Gaylee, along with their two Labrador pups, traveled to Florida in their class 'A' RV with a car in tow, and stayed at the beautiful Bay Bayou RV Resort in Tampa. Many new friends were made, and will not be forgotten. While in Florida, Joe had precious time to spend with his older brother, Charles, in St. Petersburg, and his wing of the family.

The treatments put Joe and Gaylee on a medical roller coaster ride, but upon completion in July 2009, they returned home to

Sequim to be reunited with their children and grandchildren. Joe originally was told he had three months to live, but with the treatment, lived a good quality of life until the last week. When it became evident that the end was near on October 27, 2009, family traveled to gather for sweet fellowship with 'Dad' and 'Papa' to be at his side.

Joe was born in Phoenix, Arizona on February 25, 1930, to Paul and Eldora Ankerberg. He was the youngest of 4 brothers, Richard, Charles, and Earl. When Joe was 13 years old and his older brothers joined the Navy, the family moved to Hawthorne, California to be nearer to the Fleet's port of call when his brothers had shore leave. He attended Leuzinger High School and met Myrtle Haglund, marrying right after graduation. Joe enlisted in the Air Force, but after successful boot camp and aviation academy began, it was detected he had fudged his birth certificate to enlist and was underage. This patriotic young man received an honorable discharge. Before having a chance to re-enlist, he and Myrtle began their family with sons Curtis and Keith, then daughter Kim.

Joe worked for the Department of Water and Power in Southern California before joining the Los Angeles County Fire Department on November 1, 1954. He worked at several stations in the County system and was promoted along the way. When he became a Captain, he worked at station 6 in the city of Lomita for many years with a wonderful crew, and retired from that 'house' in October, 1985. During those years he was involved with the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters), coached soccer and little league, enjoyed bowling, skiing (water and snow), ice hockey, and competed with the Firefighter hockey team. He also received gold, silver, and bronze medals in the downhill slalom for the Police/Firefighter Olympics in 1973, 1974, and 1975. He also had his license as a general contractor, and drew custom house plans. Joe and his family lived in Torrance for many years, but in 1977, they divorced.

In 1983, Joe met Gaylee Gillmore, and it took 6 weeks to go from 'hello' to 'I Do'. They were married in Rancho Carillo, California, on May 21, 1983, and were married 26 years at the time of Joe's death. Gaylee had two sons, Marco and Paul, 6 and 5 years old from a previous marriage. In 1985, Joe retired from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the family moved to Sequim, WA. Joe had read about Sequim in an issue of 'Broken Steams', a firefighter newsletter, saying it was the 'banana belt' of the Pacific Northwest, a great place to retire, and a wonderful place to raise a family. There, he built homes and drew custom plans in his newly found retirement. Very active in Sequim Bible Church, then later at Olympic Bible Fellowship, Joe and Gaylee found their niche in youth ministry between the boys' activities with sports and school. When the boys left home for college and the Air Force, Joe and Gaylee moved to Birch Bay, WA for four years, then to a lakefront home in Saratoga Springs, Utah for three years where Marco and his wife were living.

Wonderful adventures all, but Joe needed to be back at sea level as it was thought the high altitude of Utah was affecting his breathing, but it turned out to be cancer. The whole family talked about Joe's health and decided that they all wanted to be together again and so they moved back to Sequim, and then Joe became ill with pneumonia, which led to detecting a tumor in his lungs. Joe's cancer journey began that day and it was amazing to see how many new lives he touched and vice-versa during the ten month challenge....loved by all who knew him.

Joe is survived by his wife, Gaylee Ankerberg of Sequim, WA; brother, Charles Ankerberg of St. Petersburg, FL; Children, Curtis Ankerberg of Medford, OR, Keith Ankerberg of Kelso, WA, Kim Garr of Greenacres, WA, Marco Hermosillo of Sequim, WA, Paul Hermosillo of Seattle, WA; Grandchildren, Joey Opsal, Justin Opsal, Joshua

Opsal, Elizabeth Garr, Christopher Ankerberg, Kevin Ankerberg, Raquel Hermosillo, and Cruz Hermosillo. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Eldora, and two brothers, Richard and Earl.

Services will be held at the Sequim Worship Center, Saturday, November 14th at 11:30 am, at 640 N. 5th Ave. in Sequim, Wa., with Pastor Rich Hay presiding. Firefighter funeral traditions will honor Joe for his 31 years of service and brotherhood. A fire truck procession will immediately follow the service to the Sequim View Cemetery for all who wish to accompany. A reception will be held after the burial, back at the Sequim Worship Center.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements. They may be contacted at (360) 683-5242, 108 Alder, Sequim, WA 98382. Joe loved flowers, but preferred any donations be sent to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, Inc. They may be reached at (360) 452-1511, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Gratefully, the Ankerberg family
