Emma Blanche Washburn Van Hoose Emma Blanche Washburn Van Hoose (Blanche) was born in Bremerton, WA to Ida and Harold Lorimer. She attended Bremerton High School and exercised her passion for dancing as a member of the womens dance team. She met and married Robert O. Washburn (Bob) in 1950 and they had eight children. She was a wonderful mother, dedicated to her children in every way possible. Bob was a tugboat man, therefore was gone for long periods of time leaving her to raise all eight children. She managed this and ran a movie theater in Arlington and a dairy in South Bay, Olympia, finally making a home on a 30-acre farm near Steamboat Island, Olympia. After all kids were grown she moved to Kodiak, AK where Bob had made a family business in tugboating. They kept their home on the farm for occasional visits. In addition they built a home in Sequim and purchased 10 acres on Hood Canal where they entertained family and friends with unforgettable gatherings. Bob sold the business in 1992 and they moved to Austin, TX to enjoy retirement and their beautiful home on Lake Travis. She loved the outdoors and had a cat named Stranger whom she was especially fond of. She loved gardening, canning, baking, sewing and taking many walks with her family and friends. She was an extraordinary poet and character artist and put much of her life in words and pictures. She was a very strong Christian woman who always put her faith first. Her Christian faith was put to the test when she lost her sons James Robert and John Harold Washburn and daughter Joanne Loraine Washburn in separate tragic accidents. In 1994 her husband of 44 years was killed in a car accident with her by his side. She remained strong and moved back to Sequim to be closer to her family and live life to its fullest. She remarried in December 2001 to Herbert R. Van Hoose. During her marriage to Herb they traveled, enjoyed the theatre, and searched for special finds at garage sales. She loved her sisters and their families and cherished her many close friends whom she always held close to her heart. Blanche passed away on March 4, 2008 after a short but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. Blanche is survived by daughters Diane Marie Krogh (Dave), Carol Ida Keeton (Bill), Colleen Elaine Mead (Rick), Gloria Joy Day (Tim), her son Daniel Lee Washburn (Kay), and daughter-in-law Cheri Walin, her 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, her sisters Lillian M. Collins (Fred) and Joy A. Stucke (Tom) and their families. Those who knew her know what an extraordinary woman she was and she will be missed by all. We take comfort in knowing she is reunited with her family she has so deeply missed for so many years. When God started calling her she knew she had to remain strong for her children and extended family, who hadnt seen each other in a long while. Her mission was fully accomplished and renewed family closeness has prevailed! Services will be held at Evergreen Christian Community, 1000 Black Lake Blvd., Olympia, WA 98513, Monday April 21st, 2:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to Franciscan House, PO Box 1502, Tacoma, WA 98401. |
