December 24, 2008Wealthy Elaine ShortessA memorial service for Port Angeles resident Wealthy Elaine Shortess will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Joyce Bible Church, 50470 Highway 112, Joyce. Mrs. Shortess died Dec. 15, 2008, at the age of 82 of cancer. She was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Laurelton, Pa., to Francis E. and Marguerite Anne Libby Keister. She graduated from Laurelton High School. She married David K. Shortess on Sept. 22, 1949, in Williamsport, Pa. Mrs. Shortess was a homemaker while living in Williamsport, State College and Bloomsburg, Pa., Socorro, N.M., and Port Angeles. As a young woman, she earned a solo pilot's license and enjoyed ice skating. Later, her interests included flower gardening and needlework, especially quilting. She was a member of Joyce Bible Church. She is survived by her husband David K. Shortess of Port Angeles; son and daughter-in-law John and Deb Shortess of Port Townsend; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Lawrence Bausch of San Diego, Calif.; Marie and Gerry Clarkson of Brownwood, Texas; and Amy Borde of Port Angeles; brother and sister-in-law David and Betty Keister of Mifflinburg, Pa.; and nine grandchildren. Juel Smythe Sutherland A memorial service for Sequim resident Juel Smythe Sutherland will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Mrs. Sutherland died Dec. 14, 2008, at the age of 84. She was born May 22, 1924, in Tacoma to M.K. and Marion L. Freestone Smythe. She married Samuel Sutherland on June 24, 1946, at St. Paul's Church in Seattle Mrs. Sutherland was a speech therapist, model/actress and co-director of a model agency. She lived in Seattle, Albuquerque, N.M.; San Carlos, Calif.; and Sequim. She enjoyed assisting families in need, the art community and travel. She is survived by her husband, Samuel Sutherland of Sequim; sons Steve Sutherland of Mercer Island and Bradley Sutherland of Seattle; daughter Laura Jenkins of Auburn; three grandchildren; and a nephew. William T. Bell A service has been held for Port Angeles resident William T. Bell, who died Dec. 16, 2008, of congestive heart failure at the age of 78. He was born Dec. 1, 1930, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Clarence H. and Helen M. Urban Bell. He married Patricia Gakin on Nov. 1, 1953, in Sequim. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951-1954, serving in Korea. As a young man, Mr. Bell worked with his father on their farm, Bell Acres. He retired as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and worked at the family shoe store after retirement. He was a member of National Association of Letter Carriers. A longtime Sequim and Port Angeles resident, he spent many hours making woodworking projects in his shop, earning numerous ribbons from the Clallam County Fair. He also enjoyed listening to operas. He had a great dedication to his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Patricia Bell of Port Angeles; son and daughter-in-law Terry and Renee Bell of Federal Way; daughters and sons-in-law Kathie and Ken Sukert of Port Hadlock; Wendy and Greg Seward of Bonney Lake; and Mitzi Bell of Port Angeles; sisters Fedelma Winters of Port Angeles and Donna Robbins of Lynwood; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Ronald John Lloyd No service has been reported for Sequim resident Ronald John Lloyd, who died Dec. 9, 2008, at the age of 81 of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia. He was born April 30, 1927, in the Greenwood area of Seattle to John E. and Marie A. Henning Lloyd. He attended high school in Ballard. He married Mary Ann Darling on Nov. 20, 1981. From 1945-1946, he served as a radio operator in the United States Army signal corps. Mr. Lloyd worked for Seattle Pacific Northwest Bell as a central office equipment man. He was a former resident of Magnolia, Ballard and Greenwood. He was ham radio operator KB7BLZ, a member of Northwest Boys Group Seattle/Langston Hughes Tug Boat, a member of Seattle/Ballard Presbyterian Church, Puget Sound Repeater Group, C.W.A. 9102, Telcom Pioneers/Olympic View and American Legion Unit 62. She was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Reading, Pa., to Raymond and Jeanne Laomi Rehrer. She married Thomas Mort on Aug. 19, 1946, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946. She was a petty officer in the South Pacific. Mrs. Mort lived in Washington, D.C.; London, U.K.; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Orleans, France; Boston, Mass.; and Aberdeen, Md., among other places. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Mort of Sequim; son Geoffrey Mort of Larchmont, N.Y.; daughter Michelle Mort of Eugene, Ore.; and brother Raoul Rehrer of Palm Coast, Fla. Shoemake A graveside service for Port Angeles resident Melvin "Stoney" M. Shoemake will be held at a later date in Prescott, Ariz. Mr. Shoemake died Dec. 17, 2008, at the age of 66 of complications of pulmonary disease. He was born Aug. 20, 1942, in Prescott, Ariz., to William Carl and Zada Verbina Hagan Shoemake. He served in the Air Force from 1961-1962. Mr. Shoemake worked for the Boeing Co. in the late 1960s. He lived in Arizona and California, moving to Port Angeles in 2004. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law Donald "Buddy" and Benita Shoemake of Westminster, Colo., and Bill Barrett of Port Angeles; brothers Bob Shoemake and Carl Shoemake of Prescott, Ariz., and David Shoemake of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sister Zada Shoemake of Prescott, Ariz.; and two grandsons. Garling At his request, no service will be held for Port Angeles resident James H. Garling, who died Dec. 15, 2008, at the age of 87. He was born April 17, 1921, in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Albert and Margaret Long Garling. He married Carol Rose Sedlacek on Feb. 5, 1943, in Seattle. Mr. Garling was a longshoreman in Alaska and owned and operated a logging company in Washington and Canada. Later, he owned and operated Garling Trucking until his retirement. He loved hunting and fishing and traveled many miles with one of his many dogs through the years. He is survived by his wife, Carol Garling, of Port Angeles and son and daughter-in-law Ken and Myrna Garling of Port Angeles. He was preceded in death by his brothers Wayne, Wesley, Bill and Vern Garling and sisters Margaret Mitchell, Annabel "Dixie" Woods, Katherine Craver and Martha Garling. She was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Seattle to Charles and Alice Jane Storey McIntyre. She married Lester Bayley in 1942 in Port Angeles. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1991. She earned a bachelor's degree in education and was a teacher in Clallam Bay and Omak and in Escondido, Calif. Mrs. Bayley is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law William and Sue Bayley of Sequim and John and Carla Bayley of Aztec, N.M.; daughter Mary Bayley of Castro Valley, Calif.; sister Bonnie McIntyre; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
