February 25, 2009John Allen JonesA graveside funeral for Sequim resident John Allen Jones will be held Feb. 27 at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa, Calif. Mr. Jones died at his Sequim home on Feb. 15, 2009, at the age of 69 of liver cancer. He was born Dec. 21, 1939, in Denver, Colo., to Thomas Edward and Marguerite Louise Cheline Jones. He married LaRae Olive in 1966 in Las Vegas, Nev. She preceded him in death in 2001. Mr. Jones worked for Loomis Armored Transport in Napa. He retired to Logan, Utah, after the death of his wife. He moved to Sequim in 2007 and became engaged to Elizabeth Kay Whitmire. He loved family, genealogy, music and computing. He is survived by his fiancee Elizabeth Whitmire of Sequim; daughters and sons-in-law Darla and Tom Saxton of North Logan, Utah, and Tessa and Eric Hafslund of Logan, Utah; son Alan Douglas of Anaheim, Calif.; sister Pat Bundren of Atascadero, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Pearl Jones of Lancaster, Calif.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews in California, Washington, Utah and Idaho. Sequim Valley Chapel was in charge of local arrangements; Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel of Napa, Calif., was in charge of the California services. John R. Stephens A celebration of life for Sequim resident John R. Stephens will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road, Agnew, Mr. Stephens died Feb. 14, 2009, at the age of 90. He was born Aug. 14, 1918, in East Chicago, Ind., to Clairmont and Kathryn Rhodes Stephens. He married Mary Ann Vaughan on June 21, 1947, in Terre Haute, Ind. He was an Army sergeant. Mr. Stephens moved to Sequim in 1979. Kenneth 'Doc' George Henderson A service has been held for Sequim resident Kenneth 'Doc' George Henderson, who died Feb. 11, 2009, at the age of 60. He was born June 25, 1948, in Glendale, Calif., to Milton and Ruth Barber Henderson. He graduated from Sandia View Academy in New Mexico. He served in the Army from 1968-1970 as a Medic E5. He married Jan Greathouse in 1972. He married Shelley Cartier in 1979 in Sequim. Mr. Henderson owned Doc Henderson Construction. His work took him to Alaska; New Orleans, La.; New Mexico and Moses Lake. He loved fishing, restoring old cars and riding his Harley. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Shelley Henderson; son Scott Henderson; stepson and daughter-in-law Don and Deanna Kitchens; daughters Jennifer Henderson and Samantha Henderson; stepdaughters and son-in-law Tammy and Amos Dale and Wendy Ivy; brother and sister-in-law John and Joanie Henderson; sister and brother-in-law Kathie and Jim Williams; and seven grandchildren. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. John Rhodes Berryman A memorial service for Diamond Point resident John Rhodes Berryman will be held at a later date. Mr. Berryman died Feb. 5, 2009, at the age of 75. He was born Aug. 23, 1933 in St. Louis, Mo., to Adriana Evelyn Jones and John Rhodes Berryman Sr. He served in the United States Navy. He married Shirley May Davis. She preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2006. Mr. Berryman was a retired central manager for UPS. He is survived by his son Jeff Berryman of Sequim; daughters Jayne Berryman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Janis Berryman Leach of Lancaster, Calif.; stepdaughters Susan Hathaway of Tucson, Ariz., Cheryl Johnson of Blue Lake, Calif., and Carol Walsh of Glendale, Ariz.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Leslee Welch A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Leslee Welch, who died Feb. 13, 2009, at the age of 63 of heart-related causes. She was born Leslee Sharon Becker in Randall, Wis., on Sept. 24, 1945, raised in Oroville, Calif., and attended college in Reno, Nev. Upon graduation, she served as a dispersing officer in the Marine Corps at Barstow, Calif., and Camp Lejeune, N.C. She married Lew Welch in North Carolina. They moved to Klamath Falls, Ore., in 1970, where their son Philip was born in 1985. They moved to Port Angeles in 1989. She was a member of Queen of Angels Church, a math and reading instructor for Kumon students and a member of the Friends of NRA chapter. Drennan Ford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Edwin Jack Byrne A private service will be held for Sequim resident Edwin Jack Byrne, who died Feb. 12, 2009, at the age of 76 of cancer. He was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Driggs, Idaho, to Edwin Michael and Edith Wood Byrne. He married Mary Jane Onderka on Aug. 28, 1958, in Beaver Falls, Pa. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2004. He served in the United States Army as a first lieutenant, armor infantry unit commander and Army Ranger. He served from 1955-1958 in Europe and as cadet colonel in the Army ROTC during his senior year at the University of Idaho. Mr. Byrne earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Idaho, Harvard School of Business-PMD program. Before Sequim, he lived in Jackson, Wyo., Massachusetts and Connecticut. He was a management consultant for Arthur Young and Co., retiring as a general partner. He enjoyed golf, wood carving, fishing, reading and skiiing. He was a member of the Elks. He is survived by his daughter Christina Byrne of Seattle; brother and sister-in-law Lael and Louise Byrne of Pavillion, Wyo.; and sister Dona Baker of Worland, Wyo. Sequim Valley Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Dorothy E. Gale No service was reported for Sequim resident Dorothy E. Gale, who died Feb. 18, 2009, at the age of 85. She was born March 14, 1923, in Pennsylvania, raised in Southern California, and retired to the Olympic Peninsula with her husband, Lockhart Gale, in 1977. Her husband preceded her in death in 2006 after 65 years of marriage. Mrs. Gale is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Tammy Gale of Sequim; a granddaughter; and three great-grandsons. Dean Adams Decker At his request, there will be no service for Sequim resident Dean Adams Decker, who died Feb. 23, 2009, at the age of 91. He was born May 7, 1917, in Los Angeles, Calif. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. William H. 'Bill' Sanders A memorial service will be held at a later date in his hometown for William H. 'Bill' Sanders, who died Feb. 11, 2009, at the age of 82. He is survived by his daughters Mitzi Sanders and Kathrine Angel of Sequim; sons Kevin and William, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Kim; and sister Joan Kremzar, all of Wisconsin; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; cousins; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother James; two grandsons; a nephew; and his former wife, Doris. Washington St., Suite C, Sequim, WA 98382, in memory of his grandson who died in Sequim on Oct. 7, 2008. Mary Loretta Miller Schott of Sequim passed away peacefully February 17, 2009 in Seattle, WA. She was born in Rosebud, Montana on November 10, 1919 to John and Augustine (Drescher) Miller. The family moved to Port Angeles in 1923 where she attended Lincoln School before relocating to an 80-acre farm south of Carlsborg in 1927. Mary attended Carlsborg School until 1935, when she transferred to Sequim High School for 3 years. Mary and William Lloyd Stipe were married in 1937 on her family's farm in Carlsborg ,WA. They had four sons: Ronald Lloyd, John Richard, Robert Wayne and William Lee. They farmed homesteads on Lost Mountain and Riverside Road. After their divorce, she married Theodore William Otto Schott in 1953 and had three daughters, Linda Kaye, Kristy Lee and Mary Lynn. They purchased a farm on the Cays Road where they produced peas, potatoes, corn and other vegetables with the help of their children for over 13 years. Mary was the sole manager of the farm, known by customers as "Schott's Produce Farm". Her vegetables were sold locally and shipped to Seattle and Canada. Mary was a long-time member of the Sequim Garden Club where she won numerous awards and ribbons. She was a lifetime member of the Sequim Prairie Grange, and loved to go to the Casino with her friends. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting for her extended family and many friends. Her many trips included traveling to Hawaii, England, Scotland, Canada and Mexico as well as the United States. Her cooking and baking talents were incredible with a specialty being "warm berry pie". Mary "outfished" everyone on the boat! She could be found most often working in her rose garden, apple orchard and picking blueberries. Mary was selected as an Honorary Pioneer for 2009 Sequim Irrigation Festival. She is getting recognition for her longtime commitment to farming and involvement in the community for over 80 years. She was very excited about the honor and being in the parade for the first time. Mary was pre-deceased by her parents John and Augustine, husband Theodore, sister Amanda, brother John Jr., and two grandsons Ted and Tim Cook. Mary is survived by Ronald L. Stipe, and wife Candi of Spokane, John R. Stipe of Bellingham, Robert W. Stipe and wife Judy, William L. Stipe and wife Janet of Sequim, Linda K. Simpson and husband Wes of Marysville, Kristy L. Cook and husband Rick of Raymond, and Mary L. Lehman and husband Rick of Sequim. She shared a loving bond with 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are niece Shirley Herzog of Montesano, nephew Terry Miller and sister-in-law Barbara Miller of Port Orchard, daughter-in-law Shelby Schott of Sequim, numerous other family members and many loyal friends.
