March 11, 2009Pete HoldenPete was born in Port Angeles on May 16, 1948 to Art and Betty Holden. He passed away Feb. 27 at the age of 60. Pete graduated from Sequim High in 1967 and then joined the US Navy. He served aboard the Yorktown and Shagri-La for two tours of Vietnam. Returning home he went to work at the Sequim school district as lead maintence and held that position until his retirement after 34 years. He was known as the go-to guy at the school. Pete married Barb Swanson in 1979 and they raised their two children Josh and Heather. Pete was a Sequim Volunteer firefighter and the chief of the volunteers for a few years. Pete was active in youth activities whether it is basketball, baseball and found that he loved soccer the most. Pete was a Jamestown S'Klallam elder and was very proud of his Native American heritage. He was a puller for the last three years on the Native American canoe journeys, representing his tribe. He served on many committees dealing with tribal affairs. Pete loved the water, spending the last part of his retirement crabbing with his brother Marlin. Pete loved to camp with the family and friends when the time allowed as family and friends were a very important part of the Holden lives. Pete is survived by his wife Barb, son Josh, brother Merle and his wife Patsy of Shoreline, Marlin and his wife Patty of Port Angeles. Numerous cousins, 3 nieces and 12 nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Heather who was killed in 2002. Pete had a smile and a kind word for all; he was a people-person and a true Sequim native and will be greatly missed by many. A memorial service will be held at the Sequim High Gym on March 14 at 1pm. Please sign the guest book for the family at www.drennanford.com Beulah May "Boots" Nelson Beulah May "Boots" Nelson of Sequim died February 22, 2009, at the age of 79 of cancer. "Boots" was born Nov. 1, 1930, in Lakeview, OR, to Roy and Stella Cunduff Smith. She was raised in Southern California and lived in Idaho for five years. She married Richard Abell on Dec. 12, 1948, in Pasedena. They divorced in August of 1993. She married Lynn Orion Nelson on July 18, 1997. He died Feb. 9, 2008. She traveled widely in an Airstream before landing in Sequim in 1988. "Boots" was an artist in many media. She was a stay-at-home mother and her grandchildren were her life. She is survived by her daughter, Victoria Abell of Sequim; brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Judi Smith of California; grandson Luke Abell of Sequim and granddaughter Annie Buller of Utah. Besides her husband Lynn she was preceded in death by her son Scott A. Abell in 1980; and granddaughter Karian Bibler in 1995. Memorial contributions may be sent to any animal fund. Eby will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the American Legion Hall, 107 E. Prairie St., Sequim. Mr. Eby died Jan. 1, 2009, at the age of 81. His obituary was published in the Jan. 14, 2009, issue of the Sequim Gazette. Elizabeth A. Hawes A memorial service for Sequim resident Elizabeth A. Hawes will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. Ms. Hawes died March 2, 2009, at the age of 95. She was born May 25, 1913, in Waltham, Mass., to George and Margaret Anderson Avard. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Simmons College in 1935 and worked as a teacher and in medical administration. Before moving to Sequim, she lived in Boston. She traveled extensively, loved the company of valued friends, tended to her home and garden, and was a gourmet cook. She enjoyed breeding dachshunds and was especially fond of her prize dachshund Cricket. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and PEO #EP. She is survived by friend Marianne J. She was born May 31, 1932, in Detroit, Mich., to Kenneth Edgar and June Alice Gorby Rambo. She married Richard Maurice Buss on March 31, 1951, in San Diego, Calif. She attended San Diego City College. Mrs. Buss lived in California, Washington, Arizona and Michigan and worked as a comptroller. She enjoyed sewing and was a vendor at Sequim Open Aire Market. She is survived by her son David Buss of Downey, Calif.; daughter Linda Donahue of Seabeck; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Sylvia Katherine Violet Reidel A celebration of life for Port Angeles resident Sylvia Katherine Violet Reidel will be held at a later date. Mrs. Reidel died Feb. 25, 2009, at the age of 94. She was born Jan. 3, 1915, in Sebeka, Minn., to John Peter and Mary Sophia Anderson Pudas. She married Max Arthur Reidel in October 1936 in Northfield, Minn. He preceded her in death in August 1981. Mrs. Reidel was a homemaker and she enjoyed crafts. She lived in Minnesota; Truth or Consequences, N.M.; and Port Angeles. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Don and Barbara, Ron and Sharon, Gary and Linda, Roger and Boots, Vern and Linda, Rob and Diane, and Charlie and Marcia; daughter Barbara; sister-in-law Eloise Pudas; 20 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. Lorretta Tico Jane Trujillo A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Lorretta Tico Jane Trujillo. She died March 4, 2009, at the age of 60.
