At a recent meeting, Soroptimist International of Sequim honored two young women from Sequim High School as “Girls of the Month” — Amy McAndie for February and Sarah Berkes for March.

A senior, McAndie has enjoyed playing the clarinet all four years in the Sequim High School band, earning varsity letters and the Sequim High School Band Outstanding Scholastic Award in 2010.  Her entries in the Sequim Education Foundation film festivals earned her film an honorable mention in 2007. 

McAndie is a three-year Honor Society member and senior class Link leader, mentoring freshman students. As a sophomore, she represented Sequim High School in the Shiso-Sequim Sister City of Japan Ambassador Exchange Program.

McAndie said she enjoys living and working on her family farm, Jakeway Farms, raising beef cattle. Other work experiences include child care, dog-sitting, working in the high school cafeteria and volunteering at the annual Sequim chamber Santa breakfast.

Upon graduation, McAndie plans to attend one of the three colleges/universities to which she has been accepted to pursue a degree in nursing.

Berkes has made the most of her high school experience as president and executive board member of the Random Acts of Kindness Club, Rotary’s Interact Club for community service projects, Honor Society and International Club, balancing a full schedule of challenging advanced placement courses.

Berkes volunteers regularly with the Welfare for Animals Guild Program, The Children’s Montessori School, Olympic Medical Center, Santa’s breakfasts, the Festival of Trees Teddy Bear teas and other community events.

Berkes is planning to attend the University of Washington this fall to pursue her passion for a career in the business world.
