Wolves’ bats dethrone Knights

Sequim’s Wolves blasted Bremerton 12-1 in a five-inning, mercy rule-shortened contest April 19.
As Sequim’s C-teams were posting — and pasting — North Mason for 26 runs in two games on Saturday afternoon, the varsity squad was doing plenty of damage of its own in Bremerton, downing the Knights a day after Bremerton was similarly thrashed by Kingston.
Sequim (6-4 in Olympic League play, 6-5 overall) opened the scoring with two runs in the first and the Wolves’ four-run third inning blew the game open.
Grubb finished 2-for-3 with the grand slam, two runs and a steal while freshman Drew Rickerson continued his hot hitting with two triples, three RBIs and a steal.
Middleton, who pitched two innings of shutout relief, added a two-run homer while Alex Gillis was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jonathan Thom was aboard three times and scored twice as well.
Oliver evened his 2008 record at 1-1 after tossing three innings of three-hit ball. He struck out two batters and walked two.
The Wolves got a boost in Olympic League standings when Kingston was forced to forfeit two previously played games — including a 4-1 win against Sequim March 28 — when one of their players was declared ineligible.
Sequim High athletic director Chris Olson said the player in question failed to update a physical, similar to the gaffe that cost Archbishop Murphy’s football team its season in 2007.
An April 18 date at Olympic was rained out.
The Wolves were scheduled to play at league 2A division-leading Klahowya April 21 and at Olympic April 22 — results were unavailable at press time. Sequim hosts Coupeville in a non-league contest April 23, Port Townsend on April 24, Port Angeles April 25 and Kingston April 29 before finishing the season at Port Townsend May 1.
Gillis helps Wolves crush Peninsula Seahawks
Last Wednesday, Sequim’s Alex Gillis was on the mound — and he was on.
The lefty sophomore threw five and two-thirds strong innings, striking out nine batters and giving up just five hits and two walks as the Wolves toppled Peninsula 10-4 in Gig Harbor April 16.
The Wolves scored three in the second inning, two in the fourth and sealed it with a five-run sixth to topple their Olympic League foes.
“(Gillis) was dominant on the mound, keeping the ball around the strike zone all day with a great curve,” coach Dave Ditlefsen said.
Gillis also helped his own cause at the plate by driving in three runs, including a two-run single in the first, while Max Royall’s two-run single in the sixth truly broke the game open.
Rickerson, the frosh, continues to impress, going 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, an RBI, a steal and three runs scored. Following the Peninsula game, Rickerson is hitting .583 since being called up from the junior varsity squad just before spring break.
Middleton added two hits for the Wolves.
Thom cleaned up in the final inning-and-a-third, giving up just one unearned run.
