Entering its sixth season of play, Sequim Youth Basketball is open to boys and girls in grades one-six.

Each player receives a team shirt, weekly practice sessions (depending on gym availability) and six or seven games.

League officials do evaluations and establish team rosters following Thanksgiving and open season play following the Christmas holiday break to provide an even flow to the season.

All players should plan to attend one of the registration/evaluation sessions, set for 8:30-11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, and 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, both at Sequim Middle School gym, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

Those wishing to register before the second session but unable to attend the Nov. 28 session are asked to mail in a registration form and fee by Dec. 1.

Coaches and league officials conduct a brief evaluation of each player to determine skill level in an effort to divide teams as evenly as possible. The sessions generally do not take more than 20-30 minutes and players may come at any time during the sessions.

Registration fees are $40 for players in grades three-six and $30 for players in grades one-two. A family maximum is set at $100 (families with financial needs may be eligible for reduced rates).

Coaches hope to have rosters established by Dec. 12.

Games are each Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m. Jan. 10. The season usually wraps up by the end of February.

To register, complete a form found online at www.sequimgazette.com or get a registration from Larry Hill. Call Hill at 683-7093 or e-mail to lhill@olypen.com.

Those interested in sponsoring a team, coaching, officiating or volunteering in some other capacity should indicate their area of interest on the registration form. Coaches and assistants this year are required by state law to attend a video training on management of concussions. During the session, league officials address program philosophy and try to establish practice times/days.

The Sequim Youth Basketball League sees 300 youths in action on more than 30 teams annually.
