Shoreline edges P.C. for lead in North

The road to an NWAACC North division title just got a little bumpier.
Peninsula's Pirates had a chance to regain at least a share of their division Saturday night at Shoreline, but the host Dolphins' hot three-point shooting and untimely turnovers spelled doom in an 87-84 loss.
Ryan Rutherford led Peninsula (5-3 in conference play, 8-9 overall) with 22 points and four assists. Jason Gamblin added 19 points, Trevant Musgrow had 12 points and Jason Collins had 11.
Peninsula shot well from the field (35-of-57, 61 percent) and out-rebounded Shoreline 31-19, but the conference-leading Dolphins (6-1, 12-3) sank 12 of 25 three-point tries and had a 25-13 free throw try advantage.
"We're winning the statistical battle (but) we're just not winning games," Peninsula coach Peter Stewart said. "We're just making mistakes down the stretch at key times. They're a good team (but) we gave up 50 points in the second half."
Sean Jones led Shoreline with 22 points. Dolphins Alfred Miller-Soukasen and Roshawn West each sank five three-pointers.
Peninsula kept a grasp on second place, a half game up on Bellevue, Seattle and Whatcom.
The Pirates are at Olympic on Jan. 30.
"We better be prepared to play," Stewart said.
P.C. over Trojans in overtime
Peninsula's men put their penchant for heart-stopping, last-minute wins on display once again for the Port Angeles hometown faithful on Jan. 20, pulling out a 99-93, overtime win against Everett.
Rutherford sank a key, game-tying jumper with seconds remaining, then led the charge in the overtime period to finish with 30 points as Peninsula kept a half-game out of first place.
Rutherford finished 12-of-22 from the field and added eight assists and seven rebounds to his evening. After first-half foul trouble, Gamblin scored 20 points and had a game-high nine rebounds as the Pirates outworked the Trojans on the glass, 51-27.
The Trojans, led by Dirk Snel's 35 points, kept it close by hitting from long range. Everett sank 14 of 38 three-pointers, with four each from Snel and Teagan Dooley.
