Petersen earns district mark at league meet

Already with a berth to the West Central District meet in the 100 backstroke, Sequim High School junior Kris Petersen earned another with a 1:10.5 finish in the 100 butterfly as he and other SHS swimmers competed at the Olympic League divisional meet in Port Angeles on Feb. 4.
Needing to better his previous best by about four seconds, Petersen trimmed six seconds off his time.
"He's a natural," Sequim coach Linda Moats said.
Although Petersen was the only Sequim swimmer to earn a district berth, the Wolves posted several strong swims last week.
Matthew Cays, a freshman who's new to the sport, bettered his 500 free swim by 44 seconds.
"We could tell that he was pretty darned tired after the first 200 (yards), but he didn't give up," Moats said. "He kept putting one arm in front of the other and kicked and he even tried very hard to sprint the last 50."
Tanner Estep missed qualifying in the 100 free by less than a second, while teammates Randy Hogoboom and Doug Dunbar each set personal bests by at least three seconds in the event.
Duncan Skinner shed 15 seconds off his previous best in the 200 individual medley.
Hogoboom, Dylan Diggs, Kiano Stoppani and Keil Wood each improved their 50 free bests. Jared Lindorfer set a personal best in the 100 breaststroke.
He'll join Sequim's 14 other district competitors at Hazen High School in Renton on Feb. 12-13.
