In the end, the Pirates said goodbye to their fans with a mixture of tears and cheers.

Peninsula’s softball program capped the season and the final game of the program with a bittersweet ceremony sandwiched between getting swept in a doubleheader at the hands of Shoreline on May 11.

The Pirates were slated to play at Skagit Valley on May 13, but injuries and schedule conflicts left them with just seven players available so the team forfeited its games, college athletic director Rick Ross said.

Sequim High grad Marquita Espinoza had the big P.C. highlight in game one, ripping a third-inning home run. The Pirates managed just three hits in a 13-1 loss.

The Pirates tallied nine hits to Shoreline’s eight in game two but still fell, 9-1. Dena Houser was 2-for-3 and Espinoza had two hits, while teammates Colleen Murphy-Carey, Emily Garner, Heather Carlson, Holly Newton and Chelsea Rambin each had base hits in defeat.

Shoreline capitalized on 15 walks from Peninsula pitchers, as Garner, Murphy-Carey and Shayna Butcher all saw time on the mound.

Between the games, coach Jim Cheney thanked the players, coaches and fans for their dedication and support.
