Local 4-H archers fare well

Six members of Pure Country 4-H Club braved less than ideal weather to compete in the Washington State 4-H Shooting Sports tournaments held April 24. Rifle competition took place at Boyd Mordhorst Memorial Shooting Range in Ephrata while the archery competition was held at Skookum Archers in Puyallup.
Sarah Hogoboom of
Sequim and Gina Tupper of Port Angeles competed in the senior division of the air rifle competition. The competition consisted of 10 shot rounds fired from 10 meters in the prone, kneeling and standing positions; two additional 10 shot rounds in the standing position; and a 20-shot metal silhouette round fired at 20, 30, 36 and 45 yards. Despite very strong winds, Hogoboom and Tupper excelled in the silhouette round, tying for first place. Tupper's strong performance in the 10-meter events earned her a second place overall while Hogoboom finished just 14 points behind for third overall.
While the wind was a factor in Ephrata, four archers had to deal with heavy rain showers at the competition in Puyallup. Events for the competition included a Fédération Internationale de Tir À l'Arc (FITA) round, a field target round and a 3-D round. Maximum target distances were 25 yards for juniors, 40 yards for intermediates and 50 yards for seniors. In addition, all archers had the opportunity to take part in a knowledge competition.
In the bare bow, recurve discipline, Claire Henninger and Kate Powers, both of Sequim, competed in the junior division. Powers was the third-place junior in the knowledge competition and the fourth-place junior bare bow archer overall. Henninger was the second-place junior bare bow archer overall.
Sequim's Ethan Powers competed in the intermediate division, taking first overall in the bare bow recurve discipline.
Port Angeles' Kyle Tupper competed in the senior division of the compound bow discipline. In his first year as a senior, Tupper finished fourth.
Their second-, third- and fourth-place finishes qualify Gina Tupper, Hogoboom and Tupper to compete in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational June 28-July 3 in Kerrville, Texas.
The Pure Country 4-H Club is open to all youths in Clallam County. General meetings and rifle project meetings are at Fairview Bible Church, 385 O'Brien Road in Port Angeles. Archery project meetings are held at the Wapiti Bowmen Club at 374 E. Arnette Road in Port Angeles.
