Wins and losses have their place in summer baseball leagues, but coach Dan Perry is looking toward the future.

Sequim Baseball, a local club team for high school-aged youths, entered the 2010 season with 20 ball players but just six of them with significant varsity experience.

"The idea behind it is (for them) to get better for the high school team," Perry says. "Our focus isn't necessarily to win every game. Everyone plays (and) nobody sits."

Backed by Sequim High varsity and junior varsity coaches - who are Perry's coaches for this team -

Sequim Baseball gets young players on the field and puts them in real-game situations with some of the region's top summer league squads.

That was the reality last weekend when Sequim took on Eastside, a U-17/18 team at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Eastside won both games of a doubleheader, but only by scores of 5-3 and 8-7.

Sequim and Eastside ballplayers got to play a game with college-level umpires.

Sequim is back in action this weekend for the Triple Play Tournament in Tacoma, then takes on the Port Angeles-based Wilder ball club and others at the Firecracker Tournament July 1-4.
