Dillon Brown-Cummings celebrates his first sprint boat victory with a victory lap in Albany, Ore., in July. Submitted photo

Three sprint boat teams from Sequim and another from Port Angeles battled to strong finishes at a United States Sprint Boat Association competition July 24 in Albany, Ore.

Dillon Brown-Cummings, an 18-year-old Sequim High graduate and part of the TNT Racing team, picked up his first win in the Super Modified class. Brown-Cummings, whom teammates say might be the youngest sprint boat driver, has been racing since age 16. With his stepmother Teri Cummings navigating, Brown-Cummings overcame two DNFs (did-not-finishes) in the qualifying rounds to top the field on the 37-turn course at Albany, considered the largest track in the sprint boat series. His times beat all in his class and the A-400 class above the Super Modifieds — only the SuperBoats class competitors ran faster.

Sequim’s Paul Gahr Jr., driver of “LiveWire,” raced in the A-400 class received third place. His navigator is 17-year-old son Joshua Gahr, who will be a Sequim High School senior in the fall.

Sequim driver Tim Cummings, who races “Jeepers Creepers,” teamed with navigator Mike Fuller to place third in the Super Modified class — two spots back of his son Dillon.

Port Angeles’ Dan Morrison of Wicked Racing joined navigator Cara McGuire to take third place in the Super Boat class.
