Flag players gear up for season No. 3

All the strategy, athleticism and NFL style - without the hard knocks.

Sequim NFL Flag Football kicks off its third season this summer with games starting Saturday, Sept. 18.

Registration remains open through the end of August (see box).

League commissioner Craig Stevenson says the priorities of the league are to give youths a chance to learn football skills in a positive, non-contact environment while also having maximum participation per player.

"Soccer and tackle football are not for everybody," he says. "I think the word is finally getting out that there's this option out here."

Last season the league saw about 80 players on nine teams battle for titles in two divisions: minors (ages 6-9) and majors (10-12).

Game play is five-on-five with rules specific to flag football.

In other youth sports leagues, getting each player adequate playing time can be a problem, Stevenson says, but not here.

"We're having to sub players because they are getting physically tired, (plus) we've still been able to maintain small team rosters," he says.

Each team plays about 12 games and has a chance to play for league titles. Last season, coach Greg Glasser's Colts topped Stevenson's Eagles in a nail-biter for the majors championship while Michael McAleer's Jets took the minors title.

One of the more popular aspects of the game doesn't involve the game itself; players like the fact that they get an NFL uniform to wear included in their registration fee.

New to the league this year, Sequim NFL Flag coaches will be using plays and terms aligned with what Sequim High School coach Erik Wiker is using with his varsity football squad.

The idea, Stevenson says, is to mirror the high school's seven-on-seven scrimmages designed to focus on play patterns and to save youths from the tackling and offensive-defensive line battles until they are older.

Games are at the Sequim High School play fields, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The league is seeking adult volunteers to be coaches, referees, team parents, field/equipment managers and more. Contact Craig
