Clifford, Lichten lead Wolf runners at Seaside

Sequim’s Wolves posted a strong finish at their second invitational meet of the season last weekend at the Seaside Three-Course Challenge in Seaside, Ore.
Sophomore Adrian Clifford took first place among all Division III (mid-sized) schools and 13th overall on the 5-kilometer “moderate” course, helping the Wolves come within a point of the Division III title.
Sequim senior Audrey Lichten took top honors among Division II runners and was fourth overall on Seaside’s “hard” course, finishing in 24 minutes, 15 seconds.
Sequim’s boys finished with 561 team points, a sliver behind Cottage Grove (Ore.) with 560 points. Runners from 14 teams competed in Sequim’s division.
Coming off a win in the sophomore-only race at Olympia a week earlier, Clifford finished the “moderate” course in 19 minutes, 20 seconds. He edged runner-up Isidro Topete of Stayton (Ore.) by 11 seconds.
Sequim freshman Dylan Chatters was fifth among Division III runners and 59th overall on the “easy” course, finishing in 18:19. Fellow freshman Saul Flores placed ninth in Sequim’s division with a 19:17 finish.
Sequim junior Joel Christopher (21:59) and senior Alex Jenkins (22:15) went 4-5 in Division III on the “hard” course.
On the girls’ side, Lichten outraced Dani Eggleston of RA Long High School (Longview, Wash.) by 13 seconds for the top Division III time on the “hard” course. Only Megan Fristoe of Summit, Jasmine Johnson of Federal Way and Sara Mussa of Todd Beamer High School, all runners from bigger schools, finished ahead of Lichten.
Sequim sophomore Jasmine McMullin raced to a fourth-place finish among Division III runners on Seaside’s “moderate” course, finishing in 25 minutes, 50 seconds.
Known for its challenging hills and particularly for its uniform-soaking mud pit, the Seaside Challenge is a popular event for Washington and Oregon schools, with about 2,340 runners from more than 180 schools of all sizes participating in the 2010 race.
