Sequim out early at state

Sequim Gazette staff

A state tourney appearance will have to do - for now.

Sequim's volleyball squad found the first day of the class 2A state tournament a rough one last weekend, falling to Anacortes in the opening round and to Tumwater in the consolation bracket on Nov. 12, ending the Wolves' season.

Sequim went 3-1 at the West Central District tourney and won a coin toss to take the district's No. 5 seed, but that still meant a showdown with a No. 1 seed in Anacortes.

The Seahawks topped Sequim in three sets - 25-11, 25-18, 25-15.

In the do-or-die consolation bracket, Sequim got another tough match-up with Tumwater, the 2008 state champions. Tumwater dropped Sequim in four sets, 3-1 (25-4, 21-25, 25-9, 25-14).

Sequim finishes 15-7 for the season, including sub-districts, districts and state tournaments.

Sequim sees all-league players honored

Several Wolves are getting some postseason hardware after posting an 8-1 Olympic League mark and finishing in second place.

Setter Taylor Balkan and outside hitter Haleigh Harrison, both sophomores, were named all-league first team players.

Sequim senior Jessica Lauritzen, a middle hitter, was named all-league second team.

Sequim outside hitters Kyla Martin (junior) and Maddy Zbaraschuk (senior) were named all-league honorable mentions.

Sequim took home the Olympic League's Team Sportsmanship Award.

Port Angeles' Kiah Jones and Chloe Johnston were named to the all-league first team. Johnston was named the league's defensive MVP.

Sarah Baugh of North Kitsap was named league Most Valuable Player.
