Sequim coach Stephanie Lewis had high hopes for her Wolves to make a better impression at the Mark Morris Tournament than last season.
Unfortunately for Sequim players and fans, it didn’t happen.
“We’re not quite there yet,” Lewis admitted, after seeing her Wolves lose an eight-game winning streak and drop two at the tournament in Longview on Dec. 29 and 30.
“When we got some pressure, we didn’t feel like we belonged,” Lewis said following losses to host Mark Morris and Kelso.
In the opener, Mark Morris’ Monarchs jumped to a 15-5 lead after one quarter, a 34-15 lead at halftime and cruised to a 63-34 win.
Rylleigh Zbaraschuk led Sequim with 14 points while Lea Hopson chipped in with nine. Sequim starting guard Taylor Balkan injured her arm and wasn’t able to shoot, Lewis said.
The following day, Kelso jumped out to a 15-point lead after one quarter and downed the Wolves 78-43.
Mackenzie Martin led Kelso with 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Hopson led the Wolves with 16 points and Zbaraschuk added eight.
“It was definitely a learning experience,” Lewis said. “They (Sequim players) were kind of upset with themselves because they know how they can play.”
The Wolves were slated to play at Kingston, whom Sequim is tied with for second place in the Olympic League behind Port Angeles, on Jan. 4 — results were unavailable at press time.
Sequim takes on Olympic in Silverdale on Jan. 7. The Trojans gave Sequim its only league loss, back on Dec. 3.
“Kingston … will be a test with where our confidence is,” Lewis said. “We’re looking forward to Olympic.”
The Wolves then have a trio of home games: Jan. 11 versus Port Townsend, Jan. 13 versus league-leading Port Angeles and Jan. 18 against North Mason.
