It didn’t take long for Haleigh Harrison to figure out she’s ready for the 2011 track and field season.
The Sequim sophomore broke her own school record in the high jump and won a total of three events as the Wolves opened the season at a four-school meet in Fife on March 15.
Sequim athletes also finished strong in the first meet on the Olympic Peninsula four days later, with the Wolves’ boys taking third and girls placing fifth in the 13-team Port Angeles Invitational.
Harrison, who set the Sequim school high jump mark at 5 feet 3 inches, topped 5-4 at Fife and also won the long jump (15 feet 6 1/2 inches) and 300-meter hurdles (51.64 seconds). She teamed with Audrey Lichten, Mandi England and Sarah Hutchison to win the 4x400 relay.
Lichten won the 3,200-meter race and Hutchison placed second in the 100 hurdles.
On the boys’ side, Sequim picked up four first-place finishes. Adrian Clifford won the 1,600-meter race and teammate Alex Jenkins won the 3,200. Emanuel Herrera topped the field in the 300 hurdles and Jayson Brocklesby won the triple jump.
Both Sequim squads finished third as the host Fife Trojans swept first place finishes. Sequim was down 15 athletes due to missed practices, Sequim coach Brad Moore said.
The Wolves had a larger contingent — and much more competition — in Port Angeles on March 19.
Brocklesby topped the 6-2 mark in the high jump for a win, and placed second in the 100-meter sprint.
Jenkins was second in the 800-meter race and Stephen Stilts had a pair of top-three finishes — second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 110 high hurdles.
In his first meet of the spring, Frank Catelli had a strong showing, placing in the javelin (second), shot put (second) and javelin (third).
On the girls’ side, Harrison scored a win in the high jump (5-2), was second in the long jump and helped Sequim’s 4x400 relay team take second place.
Lichten won the 800 and Jasmine McMullin was second in the triple jump.
The Wolves are back in action at North Kitsap on March 24 before a two-week-long spring break.
