Winning seven events outright wasn’t enough to sweep a league match.

 

Still, Sequim’s boys track and field squad had plenty to smile about after a closely contested Olympic League dual meet in Kingston last week.

 

A deep North Mason team took top honors with 138 points, edging Sequim (116) and

Kingston (106) on April 26.

 

Earning a trio of individual wins for Sequim was Jayson Brocklesby, taking the 100-meter sprint, triple jump and high jump. Mack Grinnell won twice, taking the long jump and pole vault. Lopaka Yasumura won the shot put with a 42-foot throw.

 

Sequim’s 4x100 relay team of Brocklesby, Grinnell, Yasumura and Christian Miles also took first with a strong finish of 44.59 seconds.

 

Adrian Clifford took top-three honors in both 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

 

Freshman Alex Barry took second in the long jump.

 

On the girls’ side, Kingston dominated the meet with 171 team points, far outpacing North Mason (114) and Sequim (79).

 

Sequim sophomore Sarah Hutchison posted wins in both 100- and 300-meter hurdles while freshman Emily VanDyken topped the field in the pole vault, with Hutchison second.

 

Brocklesby and VanDyken also competed at the Shelton Invitational Track Meet on April 28. Brocklesby took fourth in the 400-meter race, setting a personal best with a 49.92 mark. It’s the second-best mark in the 2A classification this season, according to www.athletic.net. Brocklesby also finished ninth in the high jump. VanDyken was 17th in the pole vault.

 

Sequim athletes compete at the Olympic League meet on Thursday, May 3, and Saturday, May 5, at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo. Top competitors advance to the 2A subdistrict meet slated for May 12 in Port Angeles.
