With enough twisted metal to fill an orthodontist's office, the demolition derby is a true high-point cap to the annual Clallam County Fair.

But there's plenty of fun to go around for sports enthusiasts before that Sunday evening thrill show.

The fair, slated for Aug. 16-19 at the Clallam County Fairgrounds in Port Angeles, features the Professional Western Rodeo Association riders in two days of bronc-bucking, calf-roping action.

Action starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday and picks back up Sunday at noon, both sessions hosted in the fairground grandstand arena.

Rodeo events include bareback riding, breakaway roping, team roping, barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling, among others.
The fair also features demonstrations of some top-notch local athletes.

Klahhane Gymnastics puts on a show for the crowd at the Wilder Auto Community Stage at noon on Aug. 16, followed by White Crane Martial Arts at 1 p.m.

From noon-6 p.m., Friday-Sunday, the Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers put on demonstrations at the Home Arts Barn.

For those with a competitive spirit, the P.A. Peggers challenge all comers to games of cribbage, also in the Home Arts Barn.

The fair also has a rock climbing wall for the adventurous types.

Youths can challenge each other and themselves at the KidZone with tractor pulls at 2, 4 and 6 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, and 1, 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The fair also features Strider Bike Races, sponsored by the Port Angeles BMX Track.

But the highlight for many remains the demolition derby, a three-hour-plus smash and bash fest featuring several classifications and crowd-engaging antics.

The derby starts at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19; it's a popular event, so those wishing good seats are encouraged to arrive early. Tickets are $11 per person (not included in regular fair ticket).
