This just in: Sequim High senior Oscar Herrera is pretty good.

The two-time state 2A meet competitor set meet records in both 110- and 300-hurdles events at the Terrace Invite/Relays at Edmonds Woodway High School in Edmonds on Saturday, capping a strong showing overall from Sequim High track athletes.

Herrera’s 15.07-second mark in the 110 high hurdles was a personal best and the fourth-best mark among all 2A boys competitors (via athletic.net). He beat Jeremiah Stone of Bishop Blanchet by nearly a full second.

Herrera backed that up with a two-second-plus win in the 300 hurdles, crossing the line in 40.36 seconds, matching a season-best and among the five best marks in the state this season.

Sequim’s boys placed fourth in the 17-team meet behind Lakes, Bishop Blanchet and Lindbergh.

Along with Herrera, fueling Sequim’s efforts was Jackson Oliver, who took first in the high jump (6 feet) and fifth in the 800 (2:03) and joined Herrera, Lagan Habner and Kane Stoddard in placing second in the 4×400 relay (3:40).

Sequim’s girls placed ninth among 16 teams, with Olympic League rival North Kitsap taking first place overall.

The Wolves’ 4×400 relay team of Waverly Shreffler, Emma Beeson, Gretchen Happe and Kiara Pierson placed second with a 4:18 mark, just 0.12 of a second behind Ballard High.

Audrey Shingleton placed third in the 800 (2:29) and seventh in the 3,200 with a personal best 12:20 mark.

Shreffler took fourth in the 1,600-meter race, finishing in 5:26 and about a tenth of a second off her personal best.

Pierson and Abigail Hansted placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the pole vault, and Cheryl Armstrong placed seventh with a season-best 94-foot, 5-inch discus throw.

The calm before the storm?

Sequim’s track and field squads dominated visiting teams Kingston and Klahowya in the Wolves’ lone home meet of the season on April 20 and in the process set a cumulative 56 personal records and 71 season-best marks.

On a day with crystal-clear skies and only a light breeze late in the day, it was smooth sailing for

Sequim as the Wolves’ girls topped Kingston 111-39 and Klahowya 115-39, while Sequim’s boys tallied victories by similar scores, beating Kingston 102-43 and Klahowya 113-31.

Junior Mercedes Woods and seniors Audrey Shingleton and Waverly Shreffler led the way for Sequim’s girls. Woods topped the field in both 100- and 200-meter sprints, then anchored Sequim’s winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay squads.

Shingleton cruised to a win in the 3,200 at 13:06 and Shreffler took the 1,600-meter race in 5:37. The pair then finished in a virtual tie in the 800-meter race, as Shreffler backed off to join hands with Shingleton at the finish line.

Shreffler joined Emma Beeson, Telicia Busby and Kiara Pierson to win the 4×200 relay (1:53).

Junior Cheryl Armstrong set a season best with a 90-11 mark in the discus for first place, and took second with a 79-foot javelin throw, also a top season mark.

Juniors Rylee Gray and Hilary Holtrop added event wins for the Wolves, with Gray’s 13-foot, 9-inch long jump taking top honors as did Holtrop’s 28-foot, 11.75-inch triple jump.

Senior Mattie Clark added a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.

On the boys’s side, freshman Silas Isenberger wasn’t an event winner but wound up breaking a Sequim High freshman record. His 100-meter sprint time of 11.65 second was 0.14 of a second behind Hayden Sather of Kingston and surpasses Emmanuel Herrera’s record of 11.78 set in 2009.

SHS senior Jackson Oliver matched a season best with a 6-foot 4-inch high jump for first place, then won the 1,600-meter race in 4:43, a personal best. He also anchored Sequim’s top 4×400 relay team (with Curtis Gorr, Logan Habner and Connor Martin) that finished in 3:39.

Oliver added a second-place finish in the long jump (18-10.25).

Sequim High senior Oscar Herrera remains unchallenged in hurdles events, sweeping both 110- (15.51) and 300-meter (41.03) events and adding a win in the 200-meter race (23.79) at last week’s league meet.

Herrera joined Gorr, Habner and Kane Stoddard to win the 4×100 by more than four seconds.

Senior Chris Whitaker was a double event winner, taking first in both shot put (41-3.5, a season-best) and discus (130-5).

Quinton Johnson, also a senior, won the triple jump with a 34-foot, 7.5-inch effort and was second in the pole vault at 9 feet, a personal best.

Junior Brendan Lauritzen was second in both shot put and javelin. Also earning second-place finishes was senior Wendall Lorenzen in both the 800-meter and 3,200-meter races, setting season-bests in each event.

Looking ahead

With the wins against Kingston and Klahowya, both SHS boys and girls teams improved to 6-2 overall heading into their final Olympic League meet of the season, set for April 28 at Bremerton against North Mason and the host Knights.

Following that, select Sequim athletes take part in the 56th Shelton Invitational Track and Field Meet on April 30, then advance to the postseason: Up first is the Olympic League meet on May 7 in Poulsbo. A sub-district meet is set for May 14 in Bremerton featuring the seven 2A Olympic League schools, with top athletes advancing to the West Central District meet set for May 20-21 — also in Bremerton — that determines who advances to the class 2A state meet.

The state meet is set for May 26-28 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
