Fastpitch: Sequim sweeps aside Eagles, Knights, Hornets

“This is a really fun bunch,” Sequim head coach Mike McFarlen said of his Wolves, now 6-1 after a non-league win against White River Saturday. “When they play good defense, they’ll be tough to beat.”

Sequim swept a trio of foes last week, out-scoring Klahowya, Bremerton and White River by a combined score of 21-1.

Jordan Bentz had three hits and Adrienne Haggerty drove in three runs while Mckenzie Bentz worked into the seventh inning as Sequim came away with a 9-1 “road” win against Klahowya on the Wolves’ own field on March 23.

Thanks to inclement weather in Kitsap County, the game was shifted to Sequim’s field, but the Wolves played as if they were the visiting team. After both squads plated runs in the first inning, Sequim batters got to Klahowya hurler Amber Bumalough for one run each of the third and fourth innings, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and another in the seventh.

“That pitcher’s pretty good,” McFarlen said of Klahowya’s Bumalough. “(Mckenzie Bentz) shut them down pretty well and Nicole (Anders), in the four-hole right now, is on fire.”

Sequim’s 10-hit attack was more than enough for Mckenzie Bentz, who struck out six Eagles and gave up just four hits and no walks over six-and-a-third innings. Shelby Jones, who had two RBIs at the plate, worked the final two-thirds, striking out one.

Sequim also drew four walks and took advantage of five Klahowya miscues.

“We left a few baserunners (12 overall), but that’s pretty normal,” McFarlen said.

On March 25, Jones and Isabelle Dennis combined for a seven-inning no-hitter as Sequim blanked the host Bremerton Knights, 9-0.

It was the Olympic League opener for both teams.

Jordan Bentz was a double away from hitting for the cycle, Allysen Montileus hit a home run to lead off the game and Haggerty and Chloie Sparks drove in two runs each.

Jones went four innings with three strikeouts while Dennis worked the mound for three innings giving up just one walk.

Sequim capped their week with a 3-0, non-league home win against South Puget Sound League foe White River.

Mckenzie Bentz went all seven innings, striking out two and giving up six hits. Montelius went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Sparks and Kaylee Gumm each drove in a run.

White River advanced runners to third base three times — in the first, fourth and seventh innings — but Bentz and the Wolves’ defense came up with key outs each time.

Looking ahead

Sequim was slated to host North Kitsap on March 29 — results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are at Olympic on March 31 before taking nearly two weeks off for spring break.

Sequim returns to action April 12 at home against North Mason and play at Port Townsend on April 14. The Wolves then host Black Hills on April 15, a non-league matchup.
