Sheriff’s Office warns of potential mail theft

A Mail Theft Alert advisory is in effect, according to a statement released by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents in Port Townsend and Port Angeles have filed complaints of strangers following USPS, UPS and FEDEX trucks as they make their holiday drop-offs.

According to the warning, the vehicles will stop shortly after a drop-off and occupants will go to the house to open the mail. While some homeowners have scared away thieves, others have found opened and pilfered Christmas cards when they return home.

Residents who notice suspicious activity should try to obtain a license plate number and descriptions of the vehicles and occupants. They can alert the sheriff’s office by calling dispatch at 417-2459.
