City collecting food items
The Sequim Police Department and the City Finance Office, both at 609 W. Washington St., are accepting donations of non-perishable food items now through Dec. 30 for the Sequim Food Bank.
Business hours for the Police Department are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Business hours for the City Finance Office are 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Volunteers in Police Service will be monitoring the containers and arranging delivery of the donations to the Sequim Food Bank.
City offices will be closed Thursday-Friday, Dec. 25-26.
Port sets special meeting
A special meeting for the Port Commission of the Port of Port Angeles is set for 9 a.m. today, Dec. 3, at the Port’s commission meeting room, 338 W. First St., Port Angeles.
The purpose of the meeting is an open session to kick off a strategic plan process; the public is invited to the open session.

Post Office extends hours
The Sequim Post Office, 240 S. Sunnyside Ave., is extending its retail hours of operation for the convenience of its customers during the traditionally heavy holiday mailing season, according to Postmaster Mardi Muru.
The office will be open on the three Saturdays leading up to Christmas – Dec. 7, 13 and 20 – from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with full retail service.
There also is a self-service kiosk in the lobby that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Planning commission to talk marijuana regulations
The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Dec. 3, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
The agenda includes an update of potential recommendations for regulation of recreational marijuana facilities in various zones within the county.
SMUG group meets tonight
The next Strait Macintosh User Group meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
The meeting format will be a Roundtable event with four local Apple experts to show everyone some tips, tricks and good practices on the full range of Apple products, as well as answer questions about these products that people might have. Discussion group to meet
Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet 10 a.m.-noon Friday, Dec. 5, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim, to discuss “America in Decay — The Sources of Political Dysfunction.” The suggested background reading for the discussion is the article, “America in Decay,” from the September/October edition of “Foreign Affairs.”

Toys For Tots party
Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., is having a Toys for Tots Party from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.
With every toy or cash donation to Toys for Tots, you will receive a free photo with Santa. This event is a great opportunity for pictures with Santa of children, pets and families, organizers say. There also will be cookie decorating, hot chocolate and apple cider.
Rainbow group seeking food bank donations
Sequim Rainbow Assembly will be at the main entrance to the Sequim Walmart collecting food items for the Sequim Food Bank from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. At this time, the food bank is especially interested in getting peanut butter, canned tuna or cash.
The girls also will have a gift wrapping table set up during the same hours.
Checkpoints group meets
The December meeting of Stop The Checkpoints will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Museum at the Carnegie, 207 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles. The group will analyze President Obama’s executive orders on immigration and provide resources on what the application process will be.
Reading tutor training set
The Greywolf Washington Reading AmeriCorps members are providing another reading tutor training opportunity at Greywolf Elementary School in Room 142 on Wednesday, Dec. 10. New reading tutors will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Those who already are reading tutors will meet from 5-6 p.m. for a second ongoing training. Attendance at the previous ongoing training is not a prerequisite.

Volunteer Hospice accepting holiday memorials
Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County’s annual “Radiant Light” Christmas tree will be on display in its office at 540 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles, from Dec. 1-31.
Hospice will accept memorials or honorees’ names with donations of any amount. Names will appear on “Radiant Stars” displayed on the tree. Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County provides free services to terminally ill patients and their families.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
