In their final tune-up for the Olympic League meet, Sequim’s cross country squads swept a double-dual match versus Bremerton and North Mason last week.

A quartet of Sequim boys finished with matching 18:35 finishes as the Wolves took seven of the top nine spots in a dominating win in Belfair on Oct. 15.

Sequim’s boys managed 15 team points, easily outpacing the Bremerton Knights (59 points) and host North Mason Bulldogs (67).

Mikey Cobb, Peter Ohnstad, Jackson Oliver and Brendon Despain each finished with similar marks, with Chris Jeffko and CJ Daniels a second behind. Christian Ash was ninth with a 19:15 finish.

Sequim’s girls had a slightly tougher time but still managed a victory.

Sequim’s first-place finisher, Waverly Shreffler, finished in 22:24, eight seconds better than North Mason’s Caitlin Mead. Erin Vig (23:41), Audrey Shingleton (23:58) and Noelle Bittner (24:26) placed 4-6 while teammates Emily Webb (24:46) and Alexis Cromer (24:47) were eighth and ninth, respectively.

Freshman Andrew Hansted led Sequim’s junior varsity squad to an easy win as the Wolves topped the first five places. Han-

sted finished in 20:34, about a minute faster than second place Evan Chatters.

League looms

Sequim’s The Cedars at Dungeness golf course is home to the Olympic League meet. Last season, Sequim’s boys dominated the meet to the tune of 43 team points, outpacing Kingston and Port Angeles (84 points each) en route to a West Central District title and fifth place finish at state.

Nine of the Olympic League’s the top 11 boys are set to compete, including 2013 league champ Ryan Clarke of Port Townsend, runner-up Peter Butler of Port Angeles and a quartet of Wolves — Ohnstad, Cobb, Jeffko and Despain.

“The varsity boys are healthy — I just want them to go out and run their best times of the year,” Sequim head coach Harold Huff said. “We’ll train relatively hard through districts.”

On the girls’ side, Sequim looks to improve upon its fifth-place finish at the league meet. Then freshmen, Sequim’s Vig took 23rd and Elizabeth Rosales was 26th. But this year’s Wolves have a news cast of runners, led by Shreffler, Shingleton and Bittner.

The top four runners from 2013’s league finale graduated; the top returner is Port Angeles’ Willow Suess.
