For the third consecutive year the First Baptist Church Sequim has hosted a youth missions team from out of state. This year a group of nine youths and five adults from South Carolina visited Sequim to participate in the church’s weeklong vacation bible school.

“It’s a stretching experience for everyone involved,” Jeanne Miller said, member of First Baptist Church Sequim. “We are a smaller church with older members so we couldn’t do the same quality of camp without the help of the visiting church. It’s a wonderful partnership.”

In 2011, First Baptist Church Sequim’s pastor, Greg Miller, moved to Sequim with his wife because he had a successful transition from a church in Oregon to a younger church – something the Sequim church was in need of, Miller said. “It’s important to maintain a young demographic within the church so the faith is carried on to the next generation,” Miller said.

Hosting events like the vacation bible school and interacting with mission teams from different areas are a couple of ways Miller hopes to involve more youths.

Every year the vacation bible school has a theme. This year’s theme was “Agency D3,” an investigating spy theme, Jeanne Miller said. The event is open to kindergarten through sixth-grade youths and the week is broken into different age appropriate activities involving crafts, recreation, music and missions. “It has been awesome to see the youth away from our church in a different setting and watching them be bold in what they believe in,” Tara Hartmann said, camp volunteer from Big Stevens Creek Baptist Church in South Carolina.
