This rivalry is pretty sweet, even at the middle-school level.
Thanks to some key rebounding and key baskets by Jesse Francis and Brandon Payne, Sequim’s eighth-grade boys hoops squad topped Stevens White of Port Angeles 39-38 on Jan. 14, following a big win by Sequim’s seventh-grade team.
In the opening seventh-grade game, Sequim used a 14-2 run in the second quarter to pull away from Stevens White and take a 45-20 decision from the host Port Angeles team.
Alex Barry led the Timberwolves with 18 points while Josh Conomos had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds and seven steals. Teammate Miguel Moroles added four points and four assists, and Josh McConnaughey chipped in with seven points and a block.
In the nightcap eighth-grade game, the T-Wolves rebounded from a 22-19 halftime deficit to tie the game after three quarters, then got a hard-to-the-hoop score from Francis and three-pointer from Payne to get the lead. Crucial rebounding by Aaron Witherow and Dylan Chatters sealed the victory.
Sequim splits with P.T.
A tidal wave of points carried Sequim’s Timberwolves to a win in the seventh-grade contest but the momentum couldn’t carry into the nightcap.
Port Townsend used a 19-point run in the fourth quarter to upend Sequim’s eighth-graders 51-32 on Jan. 11. Anthony Pinza led the Timberwolves with nine points while Joseph Landoni sank two three-pointers and finished with eight points. Sequim was down just 32-27 after three quarters.
In the first game, Barry led a trio of Timberwolves in double digits with 11 points as Sequim overwhelmed the Port Townsend seventh-graders 69-24.
Sequim outscored P.T. 26-0 in the first quarter and 42-6 by halftime.
Barry finished with seven steals and three assists. Moroles and Josh Cibene each had 10 points while Dustin Bates and Steve Pullam added eight points each. Conomos led the team with seven rebounds.

Chimacum
Sequim Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade basketball varsity squads swept Chimacum on Jan. 7.
In the eighth-grade game, Pinza led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points as
Sequim clobbered the Cowboys 57-15. Sequim’s defense held Chimacum scoreless in the second quarter and to just seven points in the first and third quarters combined. Jesse Francis had 11 points and Christian Velarde added 10 points.
In the seventh-grade game, Barry led the Timberwolves with 15 points, all in the first half, as Sequim topped Chimacum 41-28.
