Author Ana Castillo, Peninsula College’s ninth Writer-in-Residence, visits the Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles, from April 20-22.

Castillo’s seventh book, "The Guardians," received critical acclaim in 2007. She won the 2006 Independent Publisher Story Teller of the Year award in 2006.

A New Mexico native, Castillo was a community activist in the 1970s, teaching English as a second language and Mexican-American history in community colleges in the Chicago and San Francisco areas. In the 1980s, she taught feminist journal writing, women’s studies, creative writing and Chicano literature in California.

On April 20 from 10-10:50 a.m., Castillo and college President Thomas Keegan host a conversation with students and staff in Room J-47. From 1-1:50 p.m., Castillo hosts a conversation with the public, with a special invitation to peninsula residents with Chicano/Latino backgrounds, also in Room J-47. Topics include immigrant life in the United States and border issues.

On April 21 from noon-12:50 p.m., Castillo hosts the Foothills Writers Series and Studium Generale with a keynote reading and book signing. This is open to the public. From 2-2:50 p.m. the same day in Room J-47, students and staff are welcome to join in a conversation with students about Latin American history.

On April 22, Castillo joins host Mark Valentine in a conversation with area high school and college students in Room J-47. From 7-8 p.m., Castillo performs a reading and book signing in the Raymond Carver Room at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. The public is welcome.
