Parks offer
free weekend
A walk in the park is free for one August weekend for anyone visiting national parks across the country, including Olympic National Park.
All 391 national parks offer free admission this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16.
The entrance fee waiver does not affect fees for activities such as camping, reservations, tours or concessions.

Local speedboat
racers get TV time
Crews from four Sequim and Port Angeles speedboats recently were featured on the Country Music Television network at the Oregon Jet Sprint races in Albany, Ore., on July 25.
Irwin Productions filmed races with interviews of all four Peninsula crews for a new series called "All Jacked Up," scheduled to air Aug. 22. "All Jacked Up" is a CMT reality show chronicling "extreme" American sports.
Local racers featured were Paul Gahr, driver of Live Wire; Dan Morrison, driver of Wicked; Dillon Brown Cummings, driver of M.I.P. and the youngest driver on the circuit; and first grand champion Tim Cummings, driver of Jeepers Creepers.
Local racers are hoping to host a sprint boat association race in Port Angeles on Sept. 19.
Kenyan athletes
visit peninsula
A group of 22 students and teachers from St. Austin’s Academy in Nairobi, Kenya, visited Peninsula College last week for a combination of sporting events and sightseeing.
It was the seventh time in 10 years St. Austin’s has traveled to Port Angeles.
On July 27, the St. Austin’s basketball team played a collection of collegiate and high school athletes and came out on the wrong end of a 70-48 setback. Their opponents included P.C. graduates Divaldo Mbunga, Jake Gonzales and Chidi Antoinne (Peninsula/St. Austin’s grad).
On July 28, the St. Austin’s team defeated a squad made up mostly of Port Angeles High athletes, 57-50. In that game, Duncan Owino scored 24 and Michael Owino had 18. For the Port Angeles team, Jared Moses led with 12, Cole Uvila had eight points and Reggie Burke also had eight. Also on July 28, another group from St. Austin’s played indoor soccer, defeating a team made up mostly of Sequim High School players 14-11.
The group played another indoor soccer game on July 29, did sightseeing July 30 and participated in a basketball clinic on July 31 before departing Aug. 1.
King sinks first ace
Cindy King, of Aptos, Calif., sank her first hole-in-one at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on July 31.
King used a 5-hybrid club to drive the 122-yard fourth hole at The Cedars.
Gary Salem, of Sequim, and Anita Salem, of Aptos, witnessed the feat.
