Sequim’s Senior Softball tournament team, The Crocs, played four games on Aug. 23 and two on Aug. 24, making good in their effort to repeat as gold medal winners in the Olympic Peninsula Senior Games.
“The competition was tough this year,” David Underwood of the Sequim Senior Softball Grey Wolves said, as the tourney featured teams from the Seattle area along with local squads.
The Crocs came with a fierce offensive attack, averaging 22 runs per seven-inning game with a team batting average near .750.
The Crocs opened the tournament on Saturday morning against Sims, winning 21-11. After a 10-minute break they played Aegis and won that game 27-24. Thirty minutes later, the Crocs beat up on the Raiders from Victoria, B.C., in an 18-6, mercy-rule shortened game. The Crocs ended their first day of qualifying games by beating Black Bear, 21-13.
On Sunday, following a bye, the Crocs repeated their defeat of Black Bear with a 21-13 win to advance to the championship. The Crocs outlasted the Sims once again, beating them 16-10 in a tough final match.
The silver medal went to Sims and bronze to the 70’s Black Bear team, represented well by four Sequim players!
The Crocs ended a very good summer of ball, taking home not only an Olympic Peninsula Senior Games title but also a gold medal from the Washington State Senior Games.
The Sequim Senior Softball league has more 50 members but room for more. Teams play at Carrie Blake Park’s softball fields Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting at 9 a.m.
