Sequim’s fastpitch squad needed a road win in Belfair Monday afternoon to stay in the driver’s seat for the Olympic League championship.

That’s exactly what they got, though it wasn’t easy.

Alexas Besand had three hits and three RBIs, and Demiree Briones knocked in two as the Wolves (13-1) topped host North Mason, 5-2.

Briones picked up her seventh win of the season, going all seven innings. She spread out seven hits and two walks, striking out four Bulldogs.

Rylleigh Zbaraschuk had two hits and all but one of Sequim’s starters had a hit. Sequim was 3-for-3 on steals while catcher Bailey Rhodefer threw out North Mason’s runner on the Bulldogs’ lone steal attempt.

The Wolves got to North Mason starter Kimber Bolin for two runs in the first inning on a Besand two-run single. After the Wolves plated a run in the second, Briones knocked in a run with a groundout and Besand followed with an RBI double in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

North Mason scored one in the fifth and Bolin knocked in another run in the seventh before Briones got Cassie Swanstrom to pop out, ending the affair.

Sequim plays today, May 8, at Kingston. The Wolves then take on Port Angeles away on May 9 to finish the regular season, with a chance to win the Olympic League title.

Top Olympic League teams play at sub-districts on May 12 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton.
