Annual dump day

benefits food bank

The city of Port Angeles’ annual benefit dump day will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, April 20, at the Regional Transfer Station at the former site of the Port Angeles landfill site, 3501 W. 18th St. City and county residents can take advantage of this event to clean up their homes, yards and neighborhoods. Yard waste, tires, large appliances and other metals will be recycled. Cash donations of $10 per load will be accepted for the Port Angeles Food Bank. Loads are limited to one per household (no commercial loads or vehicles) and can be no greater than a 3/4 ton truck or a 5-foot by 8-foot trailer. Tires, metals and yard waste must be separated for recycling and there is a limit of up to four tires and four appliances per household.

Enjoy an evening in Italy

The Helen Haller and Greywolf elementary school PTO and PTA organizations are co-hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser beginning at 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 18, at the Sequim High School cafeteria. The dinner precedes the Sequim Education Foundation 2008 Student Film Festival competition that begins at 7 p.m. at the high school auditorium. All five Sequim School District principals will be local celebrity servers and the 2008 Irrigation Festival royalty also will serve. Tickets can be purchased at Pacific Mist Books or before and after school at either elementary school April 16-17.

Late snowfall delays

While park crews have opened many park areas and continue to clear storm damage and prepare for the summer season, late season, low elevation snowfall has resulted in several delays. Weather and road conditions permitting, the Hurricane Ridge Road is scheduled to be open Friday through Sunday through May 4. Weather permitting, the road will open daily (24 hours a day) on May 5 for the summer season. There are currently 133 inches of snow at Hurricane Ridge; 132 percent of the average depth for this time of year. Winter conditions can prevail even in spring, however, and the road may close at any time because of heavy snow, avalanche danger or high winds. Visitors should call the park’s road and weather hotline at 360-565-3131 for current Hurricane Ridge Road conditions. The Olympic National Park Wilderness Information Center is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Visitors are urged to stop by or call the WIC at 360-565-3100 for current trail reports, spring hiking safety tips and trip planning suggestions.

Pull up a lawn chair

The Sequim City Band will perform its first concert in the park at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 20. Bring chairs, blankets and rain tarps or sit in your car outdoor theater style and listen to the free band concert. The Sequim City Band plays a varied program of marches, musicals and popular music. This month’s featues are the musical "A Chorus Line," "Born Free" and a Mozart flute concerto. The Sequim City Band performs on the third Sunday of each month, April through September, in the bandstand at the James Center for the Performing Arts, 202 N. Rummage sale to

help homeless veterans

Voices for Veterans is holding its fourth annual rummage sale with proceeds going to support the homeless veteran stand downs that help homeless and needy veterans and their families. The rummage sale is 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, April 18, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 19, at the Veterans Center at Third and Francis streets in Port Angeles. Giving scholarships to

young peninsula musicians

Monday Musicale benefit scholarship auditions are at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 20, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles. Competing for the annual scholarships are 12 students from Sequim and Port Angeles who present a variety of musical skills. Ed Donahoe, Mary Moon and Kristin Quigley Brye are judging the auditions. The Thrift Shop located at 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, is in need of volunteers to work a minimum of two and one half days a month staffing the shop. celebrates Earth Day

Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardiner will have its third annual Earth Day celebration from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, April 19, at 275953 Highway 101. Highlighting the day’s festivities is a presentation by the Northwest Raptor Center. Donations will be accepted for supplies for the Raptor Center and Wild Birds Unlimited.

Learn about the wolves

of Yellowstone National Park

Wildlife biologists Nathan Varley and Linda Thurston have been "on the ground" with the wolves of Yellowstone National Park since reintroduction of wolves to the park in 1995.

A presentation concerning the wolves will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 (tonight), at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park in Sequim. Immediately following is the regularly scheduled meeting of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society.

Admission is free, however, seating is limited to 60 people.

The same presentation will be repeated at 7 p.m., Friday, April 18, at the Port Angeles Library in the Carver Room, sponsored by the Olympic Park Associations. Call Dave Shrefler at 683-1734 for more information.

Like musical festivals?

The Juan de Fuca Festival, scheduled for May 23-26, is seeking volunteers to work a four-hour shift or more. Volunteers will receive a free festival pass for the same day as the shift. The Juan de Fuca Festival includes musical performances and a street fair that draws many visitors to Port Angeles.
