Officials with a locally rooted technology company, Intellicheck Mobilisa, Inc., launched their new smartphone application, Age ID, May 1 in Sequim at Wind Rose Cellars.
Once installed, the application easily pops up on your smartphone just like any other app and allows the user to scan the barcodes found on drivers licenses. Within seconds of scanning, the software is able to indicate whether a license is authentic and if the person is of legal drinking age.
“We wanted to do a small launch on the Olympic Peninsula before we go to bigger venues,” Bill Roof, chief executive officer and president of Intellicheck Mobilisa, Inc., said. “We’ll eventually roll it out across the country.”
Although the company’s headquarters is in Port Townsend, Roof lives in Sequim and assisted in the development of the smartphone application.
The prototype of Age ID has a similar look as the Intellicheck Law application invented by Roof for law enforcement purposes. Rather than conducting law enforcement database queries for license and vehicle status and state justice status, however, the application confirms the barcode data found on drivers licenses.
“If the license is fake, the app will alert the user,” Roof said. “If the license is authentic, the system extracts data from the barcode and determines the license owner’s age, which is then checked against state laws governing tobacco and alcohol sales.”
To operate, Intellicheck Mobilisa officials are partnered with all Departments of Motor Vehicles throughout the country.
“What we’re trying to show with this product is there are a lot of reasons technology can help in an age-regulated business,” Crystal Hudson, executive sales administrative support with Intellicheck Mobilisa, said.
Some reasons include protection from inadvertently serving those under the legal drinking age, to reduce potential accidents, increase safety and overall promote safe drinking, she explained.
“By tracking your compliance, the application allows them (venue owners) to be in better compliance with the Liquor Control Board,” Hudson said.
Although the application is able to verify age and authenticate the ID, it doesn’t store personal identifiable information and is in compliance with each state’s individual regulations, Hudson said.
Beyond company officials’ recent leap into the hospitality industry with Age ID, they already specialize in creating wireless technology and identity systems for various applications including retail, law enforcement and national defense.
Looking ahead, Roof said the company plans to move toward the health care market as well.
