It was, to coin the oft-used Yogi Berra phrase, déjà vu all over again.

Everett’s Trojans handed Peninsula its first defeat of the season last week in a 1-0 decision in Everett. It’s the same outcome of the two losses Peninsula suffered in 2014 — including the 2014 NWAC championship match.

This time around it was Everett catching the Pirates on their heels in the first three minutes of the match. Cherise Shaver crossed the ball into the box to Kristin Snyder, who headed it to the far post.

The Pirates, who hadn’t given up a goal all season, looked to get an equalizer off a Myu Ban shot in the second half but Trojan keeper Emily Sorensen got her hands to the ball and deflected it over the crossbar.

The Pirates had four other key opportunities to score in the final minutes, including two shots by Ban and Tasha Inong that both went just wide of the left post, a shot by Ellie Small that was saved and a header by Inong that missed high.

“The second half was better for us but by then Everett was organized and set in protecting their lead,” Peninsula coach Kanyon Anderson said.The teams square off twice more in conference play, with both matches at Peninsula (Oct. 3 and Oct. 21).

Rebound win at home

Peninsula (2-1-0 in conference, 7-1-0 overall) reasserted its dominance in an 8-0 whitewashing of Skagit Valley’s Cardinals on Sept. 19, getting scores from six different players.

Inong started the spree with a score off an Ellie Small feed at 17 minutes. Bri Jackson-Vallente added the first of her two goals at the 21-minute mark, and after a Skagit own-goal at 26 minutes, Jackson-Vallente set up a pair of goals — one to Brenda Torres-Hernandez and the other to Hoku Afong.

Cicely Warnick recorded the shutout in goal but didn’t have to make a save, thanks to the stout PC defense.

Coming up

Peninsula is back in action Sept. 23 when they host the Whatcom Orcas. The Pirates play at Edmonds on Sept. 26 and at Shoreline on Sept. 30.
