Looks like that long wait paid off.

After a six-month layoff from the fall regular season, Sequim’s boys tennis team showed little ill-effect from the time off as they racked up 23 points on their way to a team title at the West Central District in Auburn on May 21-22.

Reed Gunstone and Mallory Maloney are headed to the class 2A state tourney after clobbering the competition at districts, not losing a set in three matches. The pair dropped Kingston’s Rickie Sanders and Trevor Shuey 6-2 and 6-0 in the finals.

Teammate Joe Puntenney is joining them, rebounding from a first-round loss in the singles bracket with three wins to take the district’s third and final berth to state. He edged Steilacoom’s Paxton Magaway 6-3 and 6-3 in the consolation finals.

Doubles team Byron Boots and Michael Lee nearly punched their ticket as well, battling into the consolation finals with a 2-1 record before getting ousted by Interlake’s Kirk Morrison and Joe Motto in three sets.

On the girls’ side, Sequim doubles pair Katrina Chan and Stacy Hanson are headed to state as well, surviving the girls’ district doubles bracket until the finals, where Fife’s Rachel Knight and Haley Shaw edged the Sequim pair in three sets.

Sequim singles player Kyla Hall won her first match before dropping the next two, falling short in her bid to return to state. She fell to eventual district champ Tracy Landram of Klahowya in the second round. Klahowya’s Landram and Maggie Becker went 1-2 in the singles bracket.

The class 2A state tournament is May 28-29 at the Nordstrom Center in Seattle.
