Coffee with mayor continues

The City of Sequim Coffee with the Mayor program continues in December. Sequim residents can meet informally with Sequim mayor Candace Pratt at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at Bell Street Bar & Grill, 707 E. Washington St.

The mayor will be at a different published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

More discussion about shoreline program set

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

On the agenda is a continued review of the November 2014 Draft Shoreline Master Program.

Sequim groups lend a hand at food bank

During the days leading to Thanksgiving officials and volunteers with the Sequim Food Bank supplied turkeys to community members in need of a little help this holiday season.

Stephen Rosales, Sequim Food Bank food drive coordinator, estimates about 800 turkeys were distributed.

“Anybody that needs a turkey can have one,” Rosales said.

To allow everyone within the community the opportunity to enjoy a bountiful Christmas dinner too, those at the Sequim Food Bank plan to provide turkeys and food baskets from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 18-19 and Dec. 21.

Christmas potluck planned

The Olympic Peninsula Art Association will hold its next general meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

This is the annual Christmas Potluck lunch and will feature presenter Larry Bennett, a fiber from nature artist. He will demonstrate how he makes his unique pine needle baskets. Bring your favorite dish to share and do not forget your personal place setting.

As always, the meetings are open to the public.

Grinnell telling stories

Master storyteller and Jamestown S’Klallam elder Elaine Grinnell will share traditional stories from

2-4 p.m.  Saturday, Dec. 5, in Red Cedar Hall in the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Community Center in Blyn. Grinnell, a Native American cultural storyteller, specializes in the stories of her ancestors.

Grinnell presents ancient teachings and lessons through the art of storytelling using inspiration, wisdom and humor that is suitable for audiences of all ages.

CCGS hosts party, auction

The Clallam County Genealogical Society is inviting the public to a holiday party and silent auction from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, held at the the society’s research center, 402 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The auction is set for 1-3 p.m. and includes gift baskets, books, collectibles and more.

Guild thrift shop open

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

The shop is bursting with unique holiday decorations, dishware, clothing for all family members, fine jewelry and vintage baby clothing. The shop still has a 1940s vintage wedding dress. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price.

Consignors and volunteers always are needed. Call 683-7044 for information.

Diaper/book drive planned

First Step Family Support Center announces its first Diaper and Book Drive at Pacific Office Equipment, 314 E. Eighth St. in Port Angeles.

Items to be collected are diapers sizes 0-6, wipes, formula and children’s books. Contributions of warm baby clothes also are appreciated.

All donations are given directly to needy families in Clallam County.

Drop off food donations at Sequim Civic Center

The City of Sequim is accepting donations of non-perishable food items now through Friday, Dec. 18, for the Sequim Food Bank.

Donations can be placed in the red barrel in the lobby of the Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. The donations will be delivered to the Sequim Food Bank in time for holiday meals.

Business hours for the City of Sequim are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Fest for youngsters set

The Fifth Avenue, 500 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim, will host Frosty’s Winter Fest for families and children from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the center.

There will be vendors, live music, a children’s coloring contest, five raffles and the Olympic Chorus at 2 p.m.

For every donation of cat food you bring for Peninsula Friends of Animals, you will receive an additional raffle ticket for a 32-inch flat screen TV.

Learn about winter bird care

Christie Lassen of Wild Birds Unlimited will present “Winter Care and Feeding,” the Dec. 5 program for the Backyard Birding series presented by the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society. This class is third in the series presented by OPAS.  All sessions are at the Dungeness River Audubon Center in Railroad Bridge Park from 10 a.m.-noon. The public is invited to attend any or all of the eight sessions.

For adults over age 18 a $5 fee will be payable for each class. After five classes are attended, a free year of membership in OPAS will be offered. Upcoming classes are Jan. 9, “What Bird Was That?”; Feb. 6 “Nesting”; March 5 “Migration”; April 9 “Spring Landscaping for Birds”; May 14 “Spring Sounds”; and June 11 “Out of the Nest.”

Windermere plans food drive

Throughout December, Windermere Real Estate Sequim-East and Sunland are collecting non-perishable food items for the Sequim Food Bank. A donation bin can be found in the lobby of each office: 842 E. Washington St. and 137 Fairway Drive in Sequim.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.

Peninsula nature program is seeking donations

Olympic Nature Experience recently received its nonprofit status and is seeking donations to continue its programs into 2016.

The group promotes family nature and education play plus summer camps for children.
