In memoriam, golfers take to tees
The Dungeness Lady Niners played host to a special day of golf on April 26, with competition among players from the North Olympic Peninsula’s four golf courses.
No cash prizes were awarded, as all monies raised are to be donated directly to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, event organizers said.
The quartet of Effie Bentley, Jan Boyungs, Pat Conway and Carol Ingelsby won the event by a shot with a score of 39.
“Everyone walked away having enjoyed a delightful time together, knowing that a very worthy organization that meets the needs of many on our beautiful peninsula benefited from this special day of play,” Lee Stanley said.
River Center Runslated for May 12
The second annual River Center 5k Run, a fundraiser for the Dungeness River Audubon Center, is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, the morning of the parade, beginning at the JC Penney parking lot, 651 W. Washington St.
Racers, joggers, walkers and strollers are welcome, and medals will be awarded in different age groups.
The entrance fee is $10 by May 3 and $15 thereafter. Family rate is $25 for up to six people.
Day-of-event registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with line-up for start at 10 a.m. The course closes at 10:55 a.m.; slower walkers may finish on city sidewalks.

Hurricane Ridge course
A two-day mountaineering course will be offered at Hurricane Ridge, May 12-13. The course is “Glacier Skills & Crevasse Rescue.”
The curriculum focuses on techniques for glacier mountaineering. The course is relevant to beginners and experienced climbers alike. Skills covered will include knots, anchors, roped travel, fixed rope ascension and hauling systems.

Paek gets second ace
A.C. Paek of Port Angeles sank an ace at The Cedars at Dungeness on April 17, the golfer’s second hole-in-one.
Paek used a wedge to drive the 112-yard eighth hole at The Cedars.
Western Games set for Port Hadlock
The Jefferson County Golden Clovers 4-H Horse Club hosts a Western Games Play Day on Saturday, May 12, at Chimacum Saddlery’s outdoor arena in Port Hadlock.
The event is open to everyone. Western Games events start at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $4 per class for entries postmarked on or before May 7, $5 per class for entries postmarked after May 7 or the day of show.
High Point awards will be given in each age division. 4-H rules apply and competitors must be at least 8 years of age and in third grade or higher to compete.

Deadline to apply for special hunt permits is May 18
Hunters have through May 18 to apply for special hunting permits for fall deer, elk, mountain goat, moose, bighorn sheep and turkey seasons in Washington.
Permit winners are selected through a random drawing conducted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in late June. The permits qualify hunters to hunt at times and places beyond those authorized by a general hunting license.
